Google's Nexus 4 available again online (at least in U.S.)

10 hrs.

Don't blink, or it may be gone: Google's Nexus 4 phone, which sold out in December, is again available for direct?purchase online from Google's Play store. The 8GB model goes for $299; the 16GB version for $349.

The flagship Android?phone is sold unlocked and without a contract, which is part of its appeal (and the slightly higher pricing).

?The only U.S.?carrier that?sells the?Nexus?4 under contract?is T-Mobile,?where?it?will?cost?you?$199?for?the?16GB?version?with?a?two-year?commitment. You can use the unlocked Nexus 4 on T-Mobile or?AT&T.

The phone, with a 4.7-inch screen, is a collaboration of Google and LG, "representing the pinnacle of Android hardware and software,"?wrote NBC News'?Wilson?Rothman recently?in?reviewing?the?phone.?

He described it as much better than the highly touted Samsung Galaxy S III. The Nexus 4 "runs smooth as butter, and has a vibrant screen that is second to none."

Despite that, the phone's "deal breaker," he said is that if it "represents the finest example of an Android phone?? and I feel that it does ? then why isn't it?available on all carriers, and on the fastest 4G?networks?"

With that limitation in mind, to get the phone directly from Google, head over to Google Play. Once you order, the phone should ship in one to two weeks, Google says.

Dieting Habits that Work ? The Nutrition Experts

Sixty-seven percent of Americans almost always finish the restaurant portions they are served. Men are 4 times more likely to eat everything and restaurant portions are huge, denser in calories, and higher in fat and sodium.

Just knowing restaurant meals can be a problem is the first step toward solving it.

You don?t have to stop eating out. Meeting someone and sharing a meal is one of our basic social activities. It?s fun and can help relieve stress. You want to enjoy the benefits but minimize the negatives.

Just plan. Eat lighter meals around the bigger business lunch or dinner with friends. Try to get more activity to balance the extra calories ? walk to and from the restaurant. You can even balance a larger restaurant meal today with tomorrow?s meals and exercise. The concept is balance and moderation over time. One meal or one day does not make or break a diet. It is day after day of unwise food choices and little exercise that adds up.

Avoid temptations.

Stay away from all-you-can-eat buffets. We eat more when confronted with more variety and more choices. Keep the vegetable tray and give back the chips and dip. Don?t use butter on your bread; this tip will save you 100 calories or more.

?Something to drink?? ? ?Water, thank you.?

Liquid calories can add up quickly, especially alcoholic drinks and endless-refill sodas. Choose calorie free drinks ? water, mineral water, club soda, diet soda, unsweetened or diet iced tea. Or, choose lower calorie drinks ? wine, wine spritzers, and fruit juice + carbonated mineral water.

Order an appetizer as a meal.

Even if you order 2 appetizers, one to start and one as the main course, you still save calories. Ask if the lunch portion can be ordered at dinner. Share a main course with a friend. Or, ask the waiter to plate half of your regular-sized entr?e and request the other half as a take-home.

Play with your food.

Scrape away extra sauce or topping leaving just enough to provide taste. Trim away extra fat from meat. Remove the skin from poultry. Remove most of the butter or sour cream from your baked potato. Each of these simple suggestions can save you 25 to 75 calories that you?ll never miss.

On the side, please.

Request butter, gravy, salad dressing, sauce, sour cream, syrup, guacamole, and grated cheese on the side so you can decide how much to eat. Don?t dunk your food into the topping. Dunk your fork into the sauce first then spear a bite of food. You?ll still get the taste of the topping with far fewer calories.

Eat slowly and take smaller bites.

Europeans savor meals, American rush through them. Enjoy the company, talk more and you?ll eat less. Take smaller bites and don?t put more food into your mouth until you have swallowed. This may sound very simple but many of us take very large bites and eat far too fast. Teach yourself to enjoy eating.

Eat till you feel fine, not full.

You don?t have to clean your plate. Stop eating when you feel comfortably satisfied, not stuffed. Place your knife and fork across the middle of the plate to signal the wait staff you are done and ask for the rest to take home. Restaurants today are accustomed to take-always and many have designed attractive carry baskets and logos for their ?doggie bags.?

Split dessert.

Everyone loves dessert. Don?t feel you have to skip this part of the meal. Suggest sharing with another person or better yet share with the whole table. Sherbets, sorbets, and fresh seasonal fruits are desserts you can enjoy and keep the whole portion to yourself.

Wooing a big client? Proceed in steps - Business Management Daily

Like any top salesperson, Joseph Duveen targeted the most promising prospects and then sought to cultivate a relationship with them. He prepared diligently before making his move.

Duveen, a prominent British art dealer in the early 20th century, wanted to win Andrew Mellon as a client. Rather than simply contact the American banker and invite him to buy art, Duveen preferred to proceed in carefully plotted steps.

First, he studied Mellon?s public statements and observed the famous financier?s business dealings. Then Duveen role-played with his butler (who pretended to be Mellon), rehearsing the kind of conversations that would help him build rapport.

The next step was to meet Mellon. The opportunity arose in 1921, when Duveen happened to be staying at the same London hotel as the 66-year-old Mellon.

Duveen?s valet alerted his boss that Mellon was about to leave the hotel, so Duveen raced down the hall and managed to squeeze into the same elevator. He introduced himself to the banker and said, ?I?m on my way to the National Gallery. My great refreshment is to look at pictures.? Mellon accompanied Duveen and, by day?s end, wanted to buy from Duveen?s collection.

While they did occasional business together in the 1920s, Duveen?s real coup occurred in 1936. He knew that Mellon was bequeathing his collection to the new National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and he figured Mellon would be buying more art to supplement his contribution to the museum.

Duveen also knew that Mellon was living in an apartment near Dupont Circle in Washington. So he rented a unit one floor below and filled it with art that he wanted Mellon to buy.

He gave Mellon the key and invited him to view the collection anytime. Duveen did not live there, but hired a caretaker to assist when Mellon came down in his dressing gown and slippers to enjoy the paintings. Ultimately, Mellon bought all 42 pieces of art in the apartment for $21 million?the biggest art sale ever at the time.

(AP) ? The Fuse television network has turned to news veteran Rick Kaplan, who has run CNN and MSNBC and produced programs like "Nightline," to develop a music news program aimed largely at people some 40 years younger than him.

"Fuse News" is set to debut Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. Eastern time with pre-Grammy Awards coverage. The half-hour show, originating from Fuse's studios across from Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, will be repeated at midnight.

"A lot of people are covering music in different ways," said Mike Bair, president of MSG Media, Fuse's corporate ownership. "But not a lot of people are covering it deeper and in a respectful way. We thought there was a real opportunity for us."

Fuse, available in some 70 million homes, is overshadowed by MTV, but unlike its competitor has kept its focus on music and is looking for a signature show.

Kaplan, 65, walked through a busy newsroom with TVs tuned to a Fuse countdown of sexy rap videos one recent afternoon. The 47-time Emmy winner had most recently produced Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News" and Christiane Amanpour's stint on ABC's Sunday morning and has formed his own consulting company.

Bair reached out to Kaplan through a mutual friend to gauge interest, and the idea intrigued Kaplan.

"While he's not in the target audience for Fuse (the network's median age is around 27), I think he also saw the opportunity," Bair said.

A whiteboard in Fuse's office already lists story plans for the first month. The collapse of the traditional music industry has made for many changes ripe for examining.

One future story will talk about bands scalping tickets to their own concerts, another about the sound quality issues behind the resurgence of vinyl. If "Fuse News" was on the air last week, it wouldn't treat the story about Beyonce lip-synching at the inauguration as a joke, but rather look into how widespread the practice is, Kaplan said.

"I want it to be a place where if you're involved in the industry in any way ? and that means anybody with a headset ? this will be the place where you will want to go," Kaplan said.

Kaplan's tastes run to the Eagles, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. Now he's learning about electronic dance music, and even liking some of it. Liz Walaszczyk, a 28-year-old producer and contributing correspondent on "Fuse News," is gently introducing her boss to bands like the Xx.

And he's introducing her to the news.

Walaszczyk, who booked bands for Carson Daly's NBC show before joining Fuse, said that she finds blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum helpful but that there's a void in serious music journalism. Kaplan is teaching her the importance of detail in every question asked and picture selected for her stories.

"I hear his voice and I think, 'This man has spoken to so many legends,'" she said.

Co-anchors for the show are Alexa Chung and Matte Babel. Former Gawker writer Elaine Moran and Jack Osbourne are contributing correspondents.

Yes, the news producer who once worked with Walter Cronkite is telling Ozzy's kid what to do.

Kaplan brushed aside a question about whether some people in the television news business might consider his current gig a comedown.

"Oh, God no," he said. "By no means. People who say that don't get it. It's a great privilege to be asked to do this program. It's the only serious program in this (music) industry. It's a serious attempt to report on music in a credible way."

He said he's having a blast.

"In many ways, what Fuse is attempting to do with this show is more cutting edge than what any of the networks are doing," he said. "We're not starting a magazine show. We're not tinkering with the evening news."

The show will also have studio guests and music performances. Kaplan has hired Audrey Gruber, a former CBS News and CNN producer, to eventually take over for him when the show is up and running.

Sepia Saturday: shops and genealogy mazes | Family history across ...

sepia saturday 26 JanDaniel (38) and Winifred O?Brien arrived in Queensland on board the Florentia on 29 April 1853. Accompanying them on the voyage were their children Mary 18, Ellen 16, Denis 13, Sarah 12, Hanora 9 and Daniel 2. The family came from Tipperary and on the immigration lists Daniel stated his parents were Denis and Mary O?Brien (mother still alive) and his wife?s parents were Thomas and Ellen Carter (both dead). Daniel apparently went on to become a blacksmith near the current Amberley airforce runway. This photo of his shop, with staff, and possibly family standing outside, is reminiscent of this week?s Sepia Saturday theme. The photo has been digitised by Picture Ipswich.

Ipswich Library &? Information Service, Ipswich City Council, 1860-1869 ??oai:picture.ipswich.qld.gov.au:8704

An Ancestry family tree indicates that Daniel was born c1801 at Bishopswood near Dundrum, Tipperary. This is a slightly longer distance from Limerick than my O?Brien?s home in Ballykelly near Broadford, Co Clare. From time to time, I?ve wondered if my Mary O?Brien Kunkel somehow emigrated with the Daniel O?Brien family, but this remains conjecture or fantasy rather than fact. Daniel and Winifred?s daughter, Ellen O?Brien, married a John Collins and son Daniel married Anne Brennan from Maitland. There is nothing whatsoever to suggest that this family is any way connected to my O?Brien family from County Clare?BUT?

So why do I say ?BUT?? Well there are a number of connections between my O?Brien-Kunkel family and this family.

Daniel O'Brien /Picture Ipswich/People/Families/ARCHIVE/qips-2010-10-24-0003p.jpg

Daniel O?Brien /Picture Ipswich/People/Families/ARCHIVE/qips-2010-10-24-0003p.jpg

I believe it?s likely that the Sarah O?Brien who witnesses George Kunkel?s and Mary O?Brien?s marriage in Ipswich Queensland in 1857 is the daughter listed above, although I have no strong evidence that she?s the right one, rather perhaps than any other.

The link to one sister is stronger however. Sarah?s sister, Mary O?Brien, married a James McGrath and this couple witnessed the baptism of the Kunkel?s second child, Joseph.

So is there a relationship connection between my Mary O?Brien from Co Clare to the Daniel O?Brien family? Unfortunately I just can?t say.

Winifred O'Brien nee Carter. Picture Ipswich/People/Families/ARCHIVE/qips-2010-10-24-0002p.jpg

Winifred O?Brien nee Carter. Picture Ipswich/People/Families/ARCHIVE/qips-2010-10-24-0002p.jpg

There?s yet more confusion to add to this O?Brien maze because a Kate O?Brien witnesses the baptisms of the Kunkel daughters Mary Ellen and Elizabeth (later known as Louisa). ?Is Kate a ?ring-in? or is she really my Mary?s sister, who oral history says came with her older sisters Bridget and Mary? If she was a sister, and they arrived together, surely she would have witnessed Mary?s marriage as well? I?d previously discounted this because of no clear links, because Kate marries in Sydney in 1871. Would she have waited that long if she?d arrived in Moreton Bay circa 1855? She?d have been quite young, about 14, on arrival but that?s far from impossible too.

Just to add to the confusion, there?s yet another O?Brien strand to add to the mix. Bridget O?Brien, daughter of Patrick O?Brien and Mary Latchford of Limerick appears regularly in my Kunkel-O?Brien history. Bridget married a Robert Mullen and one of the witnesses to the wedding was my George Kunkel. Bridget?s husband Robert then witnesses Mary Ellen and Louisa Kunkel?s baptisms (together with Kate above). Bridget is later the sponsor at the baptism of Bridget Catherine Kunkel. My Mary O?Brien Kunkel is in turn the sponsor at the baptism of baby Mary Alice Mullen who dies in 1865. My working hypothesis is that Robert Mullen may also worked on the development of the railway line to Toowoomba. The families appear to have remained in contact over the decades as evidenced by the loan of a wedding gown by their daughter to Mary O?Brien Kunkel?s granddaughter. Robert Mullen died within a year of his old friend George Kunkel on 7 July 1915.

This interwoven story comprises several O?Brien strands:

Strand 1: My Mary O?Brien from Ballykelly near Broadford, County Clare

Strand 2: Sarah O?Brien who witnesses the Kunkel-O?Brien marriage ?is she a relation of my Mary?s? Daughter of Daniel and Winifred? Or someone else altogether?

Strand 3: Kate O?Brien who witnesses baptisms (a relation or a friend?)

Strand 4: Bridget O?Brien married to Robert Mullen who we know is not obviously related to any of these families. However the Mullen family continues their links with the Kunkels over many years.

Strand 5: Mary O?Brien, daughter of Daniel and Winifred, who married James McGrath and who witnesses the Kunkels? second child?s baptism.

This is something of a muddled link to the theme of shop and staff for this week?s Sepia Saturday, but it does show the importance and complexity of FANs (friends/family, Associates, Neighbours) in relation to our family history. Maybe something will come of this post to make the connections less ambiguous.

UN humanitarian chief in Syria for talks

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? The United Nations humanitarian chief was in Damascus on Sunday for talks with Syrian officials about the nation's conflict, which has forced millions of people from their homes, destroyed the country's cities and created food and fuel shortages.

Valerie Amos did not make any public remarks upon her arrival in Damascus on Sunday for a two-day visit, but at the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, she said world powers had not done enough to lessen Syrian suffering.

"The humanitarian situation in Syria is already catastrophic and it's clearly getting worse," she said. "What we are seeing now are the consequences of the failure of the international community to unite to resolve the crisis."

The U.N. says more than 60,000 people have been killed since the start of the conflict in March 2011.

Living conditions have deteriorated across Syria during the 22-month conflict, which began with political protests that escalated into a civil war with scores of rebel groups battling President Bashar Assad's forces. Entire towns and neighborhoods have been damaged in the fighting, and more than 2 million people are internally displaced, with another 650,000 seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

Some areas face food shortages, and even areas that have been spared large-scale violence like Damascus lack sufficient quantities of gasoline, heating oil and cooking gas.

On Friday, the U.N. announced it was preparing to send $10 million in new U.S. aid to help alleviate hunger in northern Syria.

World powers remain divided on how to solve the crisis. The U.S. and many Arab and European countries have called on Assad to step down, while Russia, China and Iran refuse any pressure from outside that seeks to hasten the regime's fall.

On Saturday, Iran made its strongest warning to date that it could intervene militarily to help Assad's regime.

As quoted by the semiofficial Mehr news agency, an aide to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Syria held a key position among a group of Middle Eastern powers opposed to U.S. and Israeli influence in the region.

"Syria plays a very key role in supporting or, God forbid, destabilizing the resistance front," said Ali Akbar Velayati. "For this same reason, (an) attack on Syria is considered (an) attack on Iran and Iran's allies."

Iran is Syria's strongest ally in the Middle East, and has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years. In September, the top commander of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard, Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, said the elite unit had high-level advisers in Syria. Iran also is believed to be sending weapons and money to Syria.

A senior Israeli Cabinet minister warned on Sunday that Israeli could attack sites in Syria if Assad's regime transferred chemical weapons to the Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon.

Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom confirmed to Israel's Army Radio that top security officials held a special meeting last week to discuss Syria's chemical weapons arsenal.

"It would be crossing a line that would demand a different approach, including even action," he said. Asked whether this might mean a pre-emptive attack, he said: "We will have to make the decisions."

Also on Sunday, Syria announced that it would drop legal proceedings against opposition figures who returned to the country to participate in a "national dialogue" called for by Assad during a recent speech.

Syria's Higher Judicial Council announced the decision in a statement carried by the state news agency. The report gave no further details.

Assad proposed the national dialogue as part of his plan to end the country's crisis as laid out in a high-profile speech this month at the Damascus Opera House.

In the same speech, however, he vowed to keep fighting and referred the opposition as criminals and terrorists ? making it unlikely anyone will take their chances on the amnesty offer.

Tens of thousands of activists, their family members and opposition supporters remain jailed by the regime, according to international rights groups.

Opposition leaders have repeatedly rejected any talks that include Assad, insisting he must step down.

Violence continued around Syria on Sunday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported clashes and government airstrikes in neighborhoods east and south of Damascus as well as elsewhere. At least seven people died in attacks in the suburbs, and three others died after a shell landed in the city's southern Yarmouk district.

The group, which relies on contacts throughout Syria, also reported clashes near a train station in southwestern Qadam neighborhood where four rebel fighters and one woman were killed.

Online marketing is one of the most efficient ways to attract the biggest number of customers to your site and to grow your business. The following article will provide you with some great advice on marketing your business online. By following these suggestions you will have an increased chance for marketing success.

Make sure your website is visually appealing and designed well. Your website is a reflection of your brand, so take its design very seriously. Your website must be designed well so that others find it interesting. The layout should make people to stay around the website and look at everything.

You need to be positive and excited about your offerings if you are to be a success in the world of affiliate marketing. Show your prospective customers that you love your product and also how great your business is. Your audience will get excited about the product or service too if you know how to be convincing. This should generate lots of sales and profits for you.

To encourage people to visit your site over others, work to offer something unique. An e-book of genuinely useful advice or even some good cartoons that share your website?s focus can draw a lot of attention. Providing a unique offer will get people excited about your site.

Online marketing differs from other types of marketing in some distinct ways. For instance: Search engines may stop focusing on title tags. When that happens, you need to be ready to switch gears, like putting an increased effort behind video marketing.

Consider customizing your site for different global locations. In other words, try to implement different versions of your sites in many languages. You will get many more customers from different parts of the globe, and you are likely to see an impressive boost in traffic. Customers who can read your website in their own language are more likely to make a purchase from the site.

Use a short promotion to help raise your PageRank on your eCommerce website. If you find a suitable deal, consider purchasing PageRank, as it will offer your site to be linked with special deals and consumer news. This is just like selling loss leaders for money.

Be sure that the URL for your business website is short, sweet and a breeze to remember. If you can, it is best to include your business?s name or major brand in the URL. While any interested person can simply Google your business?s name, an easily recognized web address will go a long way in helping your customers commit it to memory.

Use phrases like ?limited edition? or ?special edition? in your online adverting. A lot of people like to own exclusive items, so marketing with words like this will tempt people to buy what you are selling rather quickly.

A great way to get more visitors is to give them an incentive like something for free. This is a great strategy, especially when it involves a course because you can package it with another related product. Formulate a new ad campaign around the availability of the course and its many benefits to your customers.

Your website should look and perform in a professional manner. Testing your links, images, ads and checkout process for errors can avoid upsetting visitors. If your website is too hard to navigate, it will turn away customers and they may never come back.

Keep your Web marketing strategies fresh and stay on top of new keywords by reading online news and discussions about your product and brand. This allows you to establish a rapport with your customers using their vocabulary. When you use the right vernacular for your brand messaging it can connect better.

Avoid spamming whenever you can. Even though it might seem like a good idea to use automated programs to post comments on blogs, that strategy will never result in the desired effect. Don?t forget that if you do not ad some kind of personal touch to your ads, people may not be interested which will lose business.

Your website needs to be as sales-friendly as possible if your Online marketing efforts are going to be successful. Try various color schemes until you find one that looks great with your products. Always keep in mind that the appeal of your site can keep a visitor shopping or turn them completely off and away.

As you can see by now, you can grow your website?s visibility and profitability with Affiliate marketing. If your conventional marketing is not giving you the results you need, the Internet can really make a difference. Implement the tips mentioned and you?re sure to get your business the visibility you wish for.

NRA ad attacking Obama 'ill-advised'

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - One of the National Rifle Association's senior lobbyists said an ad by the nation's leading gun-rights group after a school shooting in Connecticut that refers to President Barack Obama's children was "ill-advised."

Jim Baker, head of the federal affairs division at the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, said he had made his views known to others at the powerful gun-rights organization.

The ad, which cast Obama as hypocritical for having expressed skepticism about putting armed guards in schools, when "his kids are protected by armed guards at their schools," drew widespread criticism when it first became public on January 15.

Nationwide outrage over the shooting of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14 moved gun violence and gun control to the center of the U.S. political debate.

"I don't think it was particularly helpful, that ad," Baker told Reuters in a telephone interview. "I thought it ill-advised."

"I think the ad could have made a good point, if it talked about the need for increased school security, without making the point using the president's children," he said. The NRA has advocated putting armed guards in schools

Baker was the NRA's representative at a meeting with Vice President Joseph Biden on January 10 to discuss the administration's plans to reduce gun violence in the wake of the school shooting.

He said he was not involved in creating the ad, and once it appeared, he had let others at the NRA know what he thought. "I got to say my piece," he said.

Baker gave no details of the their response to him, but said, "Believe it or not, there are occasionally differences of opinion in this building."

In the ad, a narrator asks, "Are the president's kids more important than yours?" Obama's daughters, 14-year-old Malia and 11-year-old Sasha, attend private school in Washington and receive Secret Service protection, as is routine for children of presidents.

The White House has called the NRA ad "repugnant and cowardly," while New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said it was "reprehensible" and undermined the NRA's credibility by bringing the president's children into the debate. Christie is considered a possible Republican presidential contender in 2016.

Susan Eisenhower, the daughter of the late President Dwight Eisenhower who had Secret Service protection as a child, wrote in the Washington Post that she was "disgusted" by the ad.

The NRA's president, David Keene, objected to the White House criticism earlier this month, saying "We didn't name the president's daughters ... What we said is that these are people who think that their families deserve protection that yours don't."

The president's critics also have noted that when Obama announced his plan to respond to the gun violence, he was flanked by four children. Obama proposed renewing a U.S. assault weapons ban, as well as banning high-capacity magazines and more stringent background checks for gun purchasers.

Famous bridge in India is in danger of coming down ... because of spit

Engineers say that Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge is in danger because gutkha chewing tobacco spit is corroding its pillars. Now activists are trying to ban the acidic tobacco.

By Shaikh Azizur Rahman,?Contributor / January 20, 2013

Indians bathe on the banks of the River Ganges River beside the landmark, Howrah Bridge on a cold winter morning in Kolkata, India, last week.

It was first reported in 2010 that the pillars of Kolkata?s landmark Howrah bridge were being used as spittoons by pedestrians who chewed gutkha?? a tobacco product popular with millions in India.

Engineers who surveyed the cantilever structure then reported that the struts supporting the girders of the bridge had already lost half of their metal casing: The corrosion was apparently caused by acids in the gutkha.

Soon the Lions Club of Howrah launched a ?Save Howrah Bridge from Spit? campaign urging people not to spit on the bridge. ?

The campaign spread across the city of Kolkata, where reddish-brown gutkha stains are visible almost everywhere ? pavements, streets, office staircases, business houses, and residential complexes. Prominent citizens of Kolkata joined the campaign in an effort to rid the city of the ugly stains.

Gutkha is a commercially produced pre-packaged mixture of crushed betel nut, tobacco, lime, paraffin, and other ?secret? ingredients, many of which are carcinogenic and addictive.

Some brands of gutkha also contain lead, arsenic, chromium, nickel, and cadmium, which are as bad as nicotine. To make its shelf life longer, magnesium carbonate ? which is used in fire extinguishers and is a known carcinogen ? is also added to gutkha.

Activists reported about a year ago that one-third of men and one-fifth of women across India are addicted to chewing tobacco and gutkha was its most popular form.

Because of its candy-like flavor and dirt-cheap prices ? 4 to 6 cents per sachet ? gutkha has become increasingly popular among children, who chew and even eat it. An estimated 5 million of India?s children are addicted to gutkha, and every day another 5,000 try it for the first time, according to reports last year by the American Cancer Society.

Research indicates that tobacco kills 1 million Indians annually and that gutkha alone leads to 80,000 cases of oral cancer every year ? the highest incidence in the world. In recent years an anti-gutkha campaign has picked up steam across the country with several nongovernment organizations lobbying for a ban on gutkha.

In August 2011, India?s Food Safety and Standard Authority issued a regulation declaring that no foodstuff, including gutkha, could contain tobacco. Last year some states began following the order by banning gutkha.

With Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states having banned it earlier this month, the manufacture and sale of the product has now been prohibited in 17 of India?s 28 states and 3 of the 7 union territories (UTs), including New Delhi. However, reports in many local newspapers suggest that gutkha?is being smuggled from other regions and is still being sold in many states.

Kolkata-based anti-gutkha campaigner Sekharesh Ghoshal said that states and union territories should cooperate and ban the tobacco in the national interest.

?Sachets of gutkha display a warning that it?s dangerous for health. Yet gutkha users do not pay any attention to such health risks and keep on chewing it,? says Dr. Ghoshal.

?Unless gutkha is banned and actually made unavailable in the market, you cannot stop people from using it. A ban only in parts of the country is of no help.?

But in many states the gutkha companies are fighting the ban by taking the local government to court.

They argue that gutkha is a tobacco product that cannot be classified as a foodstuff, and therefore cannot be banned. Still, courts in most states have upheld the ban.

Bela Naskar, the mother of two child addicts in a slum in Kolkata, says she vehemently supports a ban on gutkha.

?My 10- and 13-year-old sons have been into gutkha for some years. They take several sachets of it every day. It?s bad for their health. But they don?t listen to my warnings.?

?We really need a ban on gutkha in our state,? Ms. Naskar says. ?Otherwise I shall not be able to rid my children from this dangerous addiction.??

Gregory Charles to receive Martin Luther King Jr. Award

?

?I?m a parent now and I appreciate even more now what my parents did for me and for the role models they were.? says Gregory Charles.

Photograph by: Peter Ford

MONTREAL - Not that he doesn?t appreciate all the wonderful things that have come his way in this city, but it?s days like this when Gregory Charles wonders what it would be like if his family had stayed put in Trinidad where the temperature is about ? mmm ? 70 degrees warmer.

?Half of my family grew up in a place where it?s 36 degrees every day of the year,? Charles notes. ?The other half of my family had it worse. Still my maternal grandparents and great-grandparents from Quebec would probably hit me across the head if I were to complain about the weather. Besides, it could be worse, and it has been worse here.?

Ah, spoken like a true Montrealer.

Charles allows that perhaps it was the elements as well as the determination of his family that pushed him into overachieving and becoming as close as anyone in these parts to being a modern-day Renaissance man. Charles is an award-winning singer, musician, actor, choir director, radio and TV host, teacher and, oh yeah, lawyer. Almost easier to list the occupations he doesn?t have.

Charles is about to add another credit to his r?sum?. On Saturday evening at the downtown La Plaza Holiday Inn, he will be presented the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award at the 27th Vision Celebration Gala, which is held annually by the Black Theatre Workshop to kick off Black History Month festivities in Montreal in February. Charles is being honoured not only for his international artistic success, but also for his community involvement. He joins an impressive list of past award winners: Oscar Peterson, Oliver Jones, Ranee Lee and Trevor Payne, among other notables.

Charles will warm up the crowd Saturday night by tickling the ivories complemented by some inspired crooning. Also on the performing bill will be 12-year-old classical piano prodigy Daniel Clarke Bouchard, who brought the house down at Place des Arts in December at the 30th anniversary Montreal Jubilation Gospel Choir Christmas concert.

?I?m obviously very proud about the award, but in a funny way, I?m even prouder for my dad. I?m a parent now and I appreciate even more now what my parents did for me and for the role models they were. So when I?m recognized for the work I have done with kids and artists as a community-involved person, my first reflex is to think who my models have been. My dad used to tell me: ?If you can walk, run. If you know, teach.? And this has applied to pretty much everything I?ve done.

?My parents were just perfect. My mom was my general and so honest and demanding. I could always trust her to tell me how she felt. My dad was so positive and socially so astute. Everybody who has ever spoken to my dad feels like they?re the most important person on the planet. He made me feel like I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.?

Charles also points out that his parents would always stress for him to think in terms of ?team? ? and not individual goals. He hopes to impart the same philosophy to his year-old daughter when she grows up. Charles credits his wife, Nicole, a Microsoft exec, for keeping the family on an even keel.

An overachiever, too? ?Let?s say she?s an ambitious person. I can never admit to being an overachiever, either. But I can admit to being very ambitious, that life is more interesting when you follow Captain Cook?s credo: which is not to go any further than anybody else, but to go as far as is possible. And love whatever you do with all your heart and all your soul.?

He recalls how his mother used to decry the word ?satisfaction.? She felt it ?unbearable? that it meant to do ?enough.? She thought the word should be linked to doing ?everything in one?s power.?

Even by his mom?s strict definition, Charles has to feel satisfied. He began early. When he was 7, he won a piano contest at the Canadian Music Competition. After performing with symphony orchestras around the country, he would later apply his piano skills on tour with C?line Dion before breaking out as a solo act.

Charles now does about 200 concerts a year around the planet. He is forever hosting variety shows as well as his TV and radio programs. His first one-man show, Black and White, has played to more than one million people, and he holds the house record at the Bell Centre for doing it 43 times. The show also hit the legendary Carlyle Caf? in New York and received glorious plaudits from The New York Times.

One could go about his record sales, acting accomplishments, awards ? including two F?lix prizes for best stage show and best male singer. He is a judge on and a member of the teaching faculty of Star Acad?mie. He is founder and president of the Mondial Loto-Qu?bec de Laval. Plus, he is also head of the Gregory Foundation, a local charity that offers support to young Canadians in the arts. He has been teaching aspiring artists for the last 18 years. He has also been involved with specialty music and science summer camps for kids as well as programs for inner-city kids in St. Henri. To those ends, he does about 30 fundraisers a year.

And can?t forget that Charles also has a doctoral degree in civil law.

OK, so he?s not a medical doctor ? yet. But there?s still time. He?s only 44.

Charles is also one of the few who is a fixture in both the anglo and franco cultural communities.

?I?ve been lucky to receive such rich culture from both my French-Canadian and English-Canadian families,? says Charles, whose cousin Kevin Brereton is the well-known rapper k-os. ?Add to that, my Caribbean background. I have been so enriched by all these components and all these people. And I do believe my constant desire to better myself is a result of my roots.

?I don?t expect to be given the key to heaven for what I?ve done. I?m simply the result of what my parents made and I?ve followed through on what they taught me.? Pause. ?And even being a lawyer proves one can still turn out to be a decent person,? he cracks.

?Actually, I probably would have turned out to be a really lousy lawyer had I chosen to continue on that path. But it also connects with who I am. Lawyers are taught to believe in possibilities, and that principle has guided me. I don?t believe it?s possible to change the world, but I do believe that when you apply yourself, it?s possible to change your world. And the way to do that is to move people, be it by song, words or deeds.?

Charles passes down advice he picked up from then-young vedette Ren? Simard several decades back: ?I asked him how one makes it in showbiz. His response: ?Never say no.? I was a little disappointed with the answer then. But I learned to appreciate it later.?

And Charles rarely says no, be it to gigs, fundraisers or doing national anthems at Habs games.

?Talk about pressure. If you sing and they lose ? as they did against the Leafs last Saturday when I sang ? they won?t want to see my face again.

?It proves you can?t get too smug in this business.?

The Black Theatre Workshop?s 27th Vision Celebration Gala takes place Saturday at La Plaza Holiday Inn, 420 Sherbrooke St. W. Cocktails are at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. Gregory Charles will be presented with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award. Charles and pianist Daniel Clarke Bouchard will perform. For tickets, call 514-932- 1104 ext. 225. For more information, go to blacktheatreworkshop.ca

Davis-White post career-best score in short dance

(AP) ? Meryl Davis and Charlie White topped the only competition they have in the United States.

Themselves.

The Olympic silver medalists and 2011 world champions scored a career-high 79.02 points in the short dance Friday in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, topping the 76.17 they scored at the 2011 Grand Prix final as well as their 76.89 from last year's U.S. meet. The International Skating Union only recognizes scores from its events as official records.

With more than an eight-point lead over Madison Chock and Evan Bates (70.8), Davis and White are all but assured of winning a record-tying fifth U.S. dance title Saturday as long as they show up. Four other couples also have won five titles, most recently Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto.

"There are a lot of reasons to stay motivated," Davis said. "We feel we're making huge strides in what we're putting out on the ice. What better place than your national championships to show that?"

The only couple close to Davis and White is Canada's Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and their rivalry is the best thing going in dance these days. Virtue and Moir won the Olympic title as well as the world crowns in 2010 and 2012 while the Americans won worlds in 2011 and beat the Canadians last month in the Grand Prix final.

Oh, they train together in suburban Detroit, too.

Here in the States, though, no one comes close to Davis and White's exquisite performances. The short dance can be a mind-numbing event, with all of the skaters required to perform the same dances ? this year it's the Yankee polka and the waltz ? during their 2:50 routine. Watch one or two teams, and it all becomes a blur.

But Davis and White not only make it fresh, they make it entertaining.

The speed and ease with which they skated was breathtaking, as if their blades were talking to the ice. Their twizzles ? traveling spins ? were done in perfect unison. Doing one would be impressive enough ? think rubbing your stomach while patting your head, and you get the idea ? but they did five and then another four, never losing their stride, connection to the music or their connection to each other. And when they began their polka with a series of hops, you half-expected an oompah band to stroll out of the Zamboni garage.

They were so good, the audience was on its feet, the first standing ovation of the competition.

"We were really pleased," Davis said. "We've really been evolving our overall comfort on the ice, our speed and energy, and it really paid off in our performance today."

Egypt: 1 protester killed in anniversary rallies

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian health officials say a teenager has been killed in clashes between protesters and police in the city of Suez on the second anniversary of the uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak's regime.

The officials in the Suez Canal city identified the teenager as Mahmoud Issa, 14, and said there may have been more fatalities. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

At least 186 people have been injured in clashes around the country, according to the head of the country's ambulances services, Mohammed Sultan.

The clashes came as the country's mainly liberal and secular opposition held rallies across much of Egypt saying the goals of the 2011, anti-Mubarak pro-democracy uprising have not been met and denouncing Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

In Germany, internet service providers pay you! (for loss of service)

German

Ever lost your internet connection? Do the loathsome words "executive customer service" resonate with you? They shouldn't if you live in Deutschland -- at least, not after today. While that course of customer service whinging can occasionally yield some form of restitution stateside (we're being generous), for Germans it's now almost unnecessary. In a ruling issued today, a federal court in Karlsruhe has determined interruption of internet service to be grounds for compensation, as it can be categorized as an "essential material item," Reuters reports. The decision, which allows impacted users to file compensatory claims, stems from a 2008 - 2009 incident in which a private German citizen incurred a loss of phone, fax and internet service over a two month period. Apparently, the man had already been partially reimbursed for having to rely on mobile phone service, but decided to take things a little further. In other news, Americans can just threaten to switch to FiOS. Worked for us.

Syria rebels accused of church, mosque attacks

Yazan Homsy / Reuters file

A church in Homs was heavily damaged in fighting, as seen here in December. It is unclear whether the damage was caused by Syrian government or opposition forces.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

Armed opposition groups in Syria appear to have looted Christian churches and destroyed a Shiite Muslim mosquee in recent months, New York-based Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.

The rights group said it had previously documented the destruction of a Sunni mosque in Taftanaz by government troops fighting for President Bashar Assad.

The war has already killed more than 60,000 Syrians, according to U.N. estimates.

Human Rights Watch warned an increase in sectarian violence can only make things worse.

"The destruction of religious sites is furthering sectarian fears and compounding the tragedies of the country," Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director for Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

"Leaders on both sides should send a message that those who attack these sites will be held accountable," she added.

Sunni Muslims make up about three-quarters of the population, and most of the rebel fighters are Sunnis, according to the CIA's World Factbook.

Assad, however, is a member of the Alawite sect, which is more closely linked to Shiite Islam. Many of his appointees in high government and the military are also Alawites.

Human Rights Watch noted that international humanitarian law requires warring parties to avoid deliberate targeting or seizure of religious buildings that aren't being used for military purposes.

The group said it found evidence in three villages of attacks against religious sites after opposition groups had taken over and driven out government forces. In each area, religious minorities had fled in large numbers, if not entirely.

Villagers flee
In Zarzour, majority Sunnis told the group that their Shiite neighbors fled because they feared they would be attacked by opposition fighters if there was a perception that they had been supportive of government forces.

The Sunni villagers told Human Rights Watch that the Shiites had given "preferential treatment" to government forces when they were in Zarzour.

The rights group said its observations and witness accounts indicated that opposition fighters deliberately started a fire in a Shiite mosque when it took over the village.

In Jdeideh, local residents told observers that gunmen "operating in the name of the opposition" had broken into and stolen from a Christian church after the area came under rebel control.

Observers from the group said it appeared that gunmen had broken in, stolen from the church and fired numerous shots inside, shattering windows and causing structural damage.

A villager told observers that the fighters had used the adjacent priest's quarters to fire at government forces and had stolen medicine from a clinic owned by the church, looted homes and kidnapped civilians.

The rights group said it could not determine whether there was a religious motive for any looting or kidnapping.

In a third village, Ghasaniyeh, the group found that a local church had been broken into and gasoline and diesel fuel had been stolen. An observer found that the church doors had been forced open and that a cross had been left on the floor, but the group said the building otherwise was undamaged.

"The opposition of Syria should back up its claims that it will uphold minority rights by protecting places of worship," Whitson said in her statement.

Calls and emails to the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces and a representative of the Syrian National Council were not immediately returned.

Image sensors out of a spray can

Jan. 22, 2013 ? Researchers from Technische Universit?t M?nchen (TUM) have developed a new generation of image sensors that are more sensitive to light than the conventional silicon versions, with the added bonus of being simple and cheap to produce. They consist of electrically conductive plastics, which are sprayed on to the sensor surface in an ultra-thin layer. The chemical composition of the polymer spray coating can be altered so that even the invisible range of the light spectrum can be captured. This opens up interesting new development possibilities for low-cost infrared sensors aimed at compact cameras and smartphones .

Image sensors are at the core of every digital camera. Before a snapshot appears on the display, the sensors first convert the light from the lens to electrical signals. The image processor then uses these to create the final photo.

Many compact and cellphone cameras contain silicon-based image sensors produced using CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) technology. Prof. Paolo Lugli and Dr. Daniela Baierl from TUM have developed a cost-effective process to improve the performance of these CMOS sensors. Their approach revolves around an ultra-thin film made of organic compounds, in other words plastics.

The challenge lay in applying the plastic solution to the surface of the image sensors. The researchers tested spin- and spray-coating methods to apply the plastic in its liquid, solution form as precisely and cost-effectively as possible. They were looking for a smooth plastic film that is no more than a few hundred nanometers thick. Spray-coating was found to be the best method, using either a simple spray gun or a spray robot.

Thin coating with high sensitivity to light

Organic sensors have already proven their worth in tests: They are up to three times more sensitive to light than conventional CMOS sensors, whose electronic components conceal some of the pixels, and therefore the photoactive silicon surface.

Organic sensors can be manufactured without the expensive post-processing step typically required for CMOS sensors, which involves for example applying micro-lenses to increase the amount of captured light. Every part of every single pixel, including the electronics, is sprayed with the liquid polymer solution, giving a surface that is 100 percent light-sensitive. The low noise and high frame rate properties of the organic sensors also make them a good fit for cameras.

Potential for developing low-cost infrared sensors

Another advantage of the plastic sensors is that different chemical compounds can be used to capture different parts of the light spectrum. For example, the PCBM and P3HT polymers are ideal for the detection of visible light. Other organic compounds, like squaraine dyes, are sensitive to light in the near-infrared region.

"By choosing the right organic compounds, we are able to develop new applications that were too costly up until now," explains Prof. Paolo Lugli, who holds the Chair of Nanoelectronics at TUM. "The future uses of organic infrared sensors include driver assistance systems for night vision and regular compact and cellphone cameras. Yet, the lack of suitable polymers is the main hurdle."
