As children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) grow into adulthood, disability due to disease may adversely affect their ability to achieve educational success. Findings published in Arthritis & Rheumatism, a journal of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), suggest that functional disability impacts educational attainment, which is key to successful employment in adulthood.

Arthritis is a joint disorder characterized by painful inflammation, swelling, and stiffness that can damage joints and lead to disability. When chronic arthritis strikes those under 16 years of age it s referred to as JIA and affects 294,000 children in the U.S. according to the ACR. In the past two decades, studies have shown that early, aggressive treatment with disease modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs) like methotrexate, or biological drugs known as tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors such as adalimumab (Humira), can improve long-term outcomes for JIA patients.

"Despite effective treatment early on, some JIA patients enter adulthood with joint damage, disability, and lowered quality of life," explains Dr. Ajay Malviya, a Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon based at Newcastle upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust in the U.K. "There are significantly higher rates of unemployment in adult JIA patients compared to healthy counterparts, which remains poorly understood."

To further investigate the dependency between employment and educational achievement in adult JIA patients, researchers recruited 103 participants who were treated at the musculoskeletal unit at the Freeman Hospital in the UK. There were 22 males and 81 females with a median age of 24 years and median disease duration of 19 years. Participants were surveyed about educational achievement, employment status, and they completed a health assessment questionnaire (HAQ) to measure functional disability.

Findings indicate that functional disability as measured by the HAQ was significantly lower in employed patients and in those with oligoarticular JIA. Educational achievement was not influenced by JIA subtypes: oligoarticular (40); polyarticular rheumatoid factor (RF) positive (23); polyarticular RF negative (17); systemic (10) and others (11). Patients who did receive their secondary education certificate had greater success later in life, obtaining more professional or managerial jobs.

The team also noted that job stability was influenced positively by educational achievement and negatively by the disability score. "Our study shows the impact of JIA on various employment outcomes," concludes Dr. Malviya. "Further research that helps patients to determine ideal career choices and take into account their disease activity is warranted."

Throughout the month of May, the American College of Rheumatology, ACR Research and Education Foundation, Arthritis Foundation, Mayo Clinic, and Nemours are partnering to celebrate Arthritis Action Month (formerly Arthritis Awareness Month) in the U.S.

Romney ready to claim GOP nomination after Texas

(AP) ? Mitt Romney is poised to clinch the Republican presidential nomination after Tuesday's Texas GOP primary, a largely uncontested election that will formalize the former Massachusetts governor's status as President Barack Obama's general election challenger.

While Romney's nomination has been virtually assured for a month, the day marks the culmination of several years of work, dating back to his unsuccessful 2008 effort, and perhaps far earlier.

"It'll be a big day tomorrow," Romney told reporters aboard his campaign plane Monday evening. "I'm looking forward to the good news."

But Romney's focus Tuesday will be hundreds of miles north of Texas, where he's scheduled to court voters and donors in Colorado and Nevada during a two-state swing punctuated by a Las Vegas fundraiser with conservative businessman Donald Trump.

The evening event, set for the Trump International Hotel, comes amidst fresh criticism from Republicans and Democrats over Trump's continued questioning of Obama's citizenship. Romney hasn't condemned Trump's false claims, offering a fresh example of the presidential contender's reluctance to confront his party's more extreme elements. There have been other examples in recent weeks that underscore Romney's delicate push to win over skeptical conservatives while appealing to moderates and independents who generally deliver general election victories.

Asked Monday to weigh in on Trump's support for the so-called birther movement, Romney declined to condemn Trump's latest suggestion that Obama was born in Kenya.

"I don't agree with all the people who support me. And my guess is they don't all agree with everything I believe in," Romney told reporters before flying from California to Colorado Monday evening. "But I need to get 50.1 percent or more. And I'm appreciative to have the help of a lot of good people."

Polling suggests that the election between Romney and Obama will be very close, ultimately decided by several swing states, Colorado and Nevada among them. Romney will begin campaigning Tuesday in the northern Colorado town of Craig before flying to Las Vegas for an afternoon rally before the Trump fundraiser.

The Texas primary offers 152 delegates; Romney is just 58 delegates shy of the 1,144 needed to become the nominee. His Republican rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich already have endorsed Romney, while Texas Rep. Ron Paul has stopped actively campaigning. Gingrich is expected to attend the Trump fundraiser.

Under similar circumstances last week, Romney swept all the delegates in GOP primaries in Kentucky and Arkansas and picked up more endorsements from party leaders.

But Romney's meeting with Trump may generate as much interest, or more, than his tightened grasp on the Republican nomination.

"I do not understand the cost benefit here," conservative commentator George Will said over the weekend. "The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious, it seems to me."

"Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics," Will continued. "Again, I don't understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking?"

Trump revived the false claims about Obama's birthplace late last week, citing a discredited story about a literary agency that mistakenly listed that Obama was born in Kenya.

While Romney briefly addressed the issue Monday, his senior aide Eric Fehrnstrom also declined to condemn Trump's remarks in a recent interview.

"I can't speak for Donald Trump ... but I can tell you that Mitt Romney accepts that President Obama was born in the United States," Fehrnstrom said. "He doesn't view the place of his birth as an issue in this campaign."

Romney has been criticized on several occasions for failing to speak out against extreme rhetoric from his party. The reluctance stands in contrast to the 2008 GOP presidential nominee and current Romney supporter, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., who once corrected a supporter who called Obama a Muslim.

And on Tuesday, Obama's re-election campaign surfaced a new television commercial directly accusing Romney of failing to stand up to "the voices of extremism" in his party.

The ad takes the former Massachusetts governor to task for failing to speak out against real estate mogul Donald Trump, a supporter who has consistently charged that Obama is not a U.S. citizen. It opens by showing 2008 nominee John McCain brushing aside a woman who raised the citizenship issue at a town hall-style meeting, and the commercial asks the viewer, "Why won't Mitt Romney do the same?"

Campaigning in Cleveland earlier in the month, Romney did not initially respond to a supporter who suggested that Obama should be tried for treason. He said after the rally that he didn't agree.

He was also slow to condemn conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, who said a college student defending Obama's contraception policy was "a slut." At the time, Romney initially declined to weigh in on the issue before saying "it's not the language" he would have used.

And he was initially silent on violent rhetoric from classic rocker Ted Nugent before a spokeswoman said Romney "believes everyone needs to be civil."

Lower rates give no respite to Brazil stocks | Global Investing

In normal times, an aggressive central bank campaign to cut interest rates would provide fodder for stock market bulls. That?s not happening in?Brazil.?Its?interest rate, the Selic, has fallen 350 basis?points since last August and?is?likely to fall further at this week?s meeting to a?record low of 8.5 percent. Yet the Sao Paulo stock?market is among the world?s worst performers this year, with losses of?around 4 percent. That?s?better than fellow BRIC Russia but?far worse?than India and China.

Brazil?s central bank and government are understandably worried about a Chinese growth slowdown that would eat into Brazilian commodity exports. They are therefore hoping that rate cuts will prepare the domestic economy to take up the slack.

But the haste to cut interest rates?appears to have?spooked some foreign investors, with many?seeing the moves as evidence of political pressure on the central bank. A closely-watched survey from Bank of America/Merill Lynch showed that fund managers had swung into a net 14 percent underweight?on Brazil in May?from?a?net?overweight of over 20 percent in April?(See graphic).?This is the first time investors?have turned?negative on Brazil?since February 2011, BofA/ML said.

Brazil is?the least favoured BRIC play forNick Timberlake,?who oversees?more than $10?billion in BRIC equities at? HSBC Global Asset?Management.?It accounts for just 17 percent of the portfolio?(India is 22 percent, China 29 percent and Russia 31 percent). That?s because:

Valuation signals in Brazil and companies? profitability are not as strong as the other BRICs?and it?s fair to say there are question marks over the independence of the central bank.

Moreover, Brazil?s banks are bearing the brunt of the government?s drive to?boost cheap credit, with shares in?banks such as Bradesco and Itau suffering heavy losses this year.?First, loan delinquencies are rising, with the default ratio the highest since November 2009.? But as big state-run banks dish out cheap loans, private banks are also?facing pressure to lend more and at?lower rates. That is likely to further drive up default rates.??Timberlake says:

(The government) has been trying to squeeze spreads on bank loans and these are not good things as far as stocks are concerned.

And in spite of the policymakers? rate-cutting spree, growth is slumping. Analysts?polled by Reuters see the economy growing by less than 3 percent this year, well below levels expected from India, China and Russia. All eyes will be on China now, says John-Paul Smith at Deutsche Bank.

Prices (for Brazilian stocks) have come off a long way but what keeps me negative is my view on the Chinese economy, that it will slow further. If that happens, the biggest victims will be Brazil and Russia.

Japan and China to start direct currency trading | News Hours BD ...

Published on May 29, 2012 ????? No Comments

Trade & Finance Desk :

Japan said today it will start direct currency trading with China for the first time, scrapping the dollar as an intermediary unit to boost ties between the two Asian economic giants.

The move, which will boost trade and investment between the traditional rivals, marks the first time Beijing has allowed a major currency other than the greenback to trade directly with the yuan.

?From June 1, the yen-yuan exchange rate will be constantly indicated in both markets, facilitating full-fledged direct exchange trading,? Japan?s Finance Minister Jun Azumi told a regular press briefing.

By not using the dollar as an intermediate currency ?we can lower transaction costs and reduce settlement risks at financial institutions as well as making both nations? currencies more useful?, he added.

The announcement also comes as China introduces measures as part of a long-term goal of internationalising its currency to rival the dollar.

Beijing described Tuesday?s move as an ?important step? in ?strengthening cooperation between China and Japan in developing financial markets and mutually promoting direct trading between the two currencies based on market principle.?

?The People?s Bank of China actively supports (the move),? said a statement issued by the China Foreign Exchange Trade System, the central bank?s forex arm.

The Chinese central bank earlier Tuesday fixed a rate of 7.9480 yuan for every 100 yen, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

The yen trades freely against the greenback on global foreign-exchange markets, with the dollar buying 79.52 yen in Asian trade on Tuesday.

However the yuan is allowed to move within only a tight range against the dollar.

China overtook Japan to become the world?s second-largest economy in 2010, and the neighbours are forging closer business ties despite frequent diplomatic spats over territorial claims and lingering historical animosities.

China is Japan?s largest trading partner, but about 60 percent of their mutual trade is denominated in US dollars.

In March, Japan said it had won approval from Beijing to buy Chinese government bonds for the first time ? Beijing does not allow investors to freely purchase its debt, requiring official approval instead.

Tokyo said it got the green light to buy Chinese government bond issues worth about 65 billion yuan ($10.25 billion), a relatively small amount, with Azumi saying at the time that the investment was ?an appropriate amount for the initial purpose of strengthening bilateral economic ties?.

The economic powerhouses have also agreed to promote the use of their currencies in bilateral transactions ? such as yuan- denominated foreign direct investment by Japanese companies in China ? to reduce foreign exchange risks.

The yen, meanwhile, hit historic highs against the dollar last year, denting exporters whose products become less competitive overseas when the currency strengthens.

Japanese finance officials have vowed to step into currency markets again to tame the value of the unit, which is increasingly seen as a safe-haven currency as the euro takes a hit owing to worries about the debt-hit eurozone.

People often do not realize how much they ignore when emotions. They cave to the provocations of society and control anything, Which doesn?t always conform. As a result of, The emotions gain a physical current expression negative mental and emotional symptoms, Which is less than optimal for creating an effective and abundant life.
EFT Tapping is one way to help create the space necessary to obtain a designed outcome. The basis behind tapping and EFT abundance is unpredictably simple. Most people be familiar with acupuncture. The concept behind this different medicinal practice is that there is energy flowing through the body, Illness is the result of block in the flow of that energy. In acupuncture needles are used and graded at the meridian points of the body. This practice was compiled to, The theory is that, Break up the actual block and allow the power of the body to flow freely. Freely flowing energy means many people or reduction of symptoms caused by illness.
EFT abundance practices and EFT Tapping techniques are created to work similarly to acupuncture, With out the needles. Tapping is a lot more hitting pressure points randomly with fingers in order to help facilitate the breaking of negative energy and allow the body to rebalance itself. Tapping is often used for some other self-Help techniques such as statements and affirmations.
When a beginning practitioner is in the primary stages of learning tapping the first things discussed and taught is observation. When an individual who is looking to bring abundance or prosperity into their lives says an affirmation or writes out a goal; If they truly believe that it is achievable to achieve this goal, Then emotionally there isn?t any flinching. What is also not heard is the small voice at the back of the mind, Which speaks up and says maybe not worthy or the goal is unattainable for them.
One of the basic principles of tapping is acceptance. In order to move on from a particular emotional event and deal with those emotions without permitting them to affect the outcome of a situation a practitioner must first look at, Acknowledge and then choose to move on from this thoughts and emotions being generated. While touching EFT Tapping, A practitioner looks for the mental flinch that serve negative emotions responding to a positively desired outcome.
When the flinch occurs the practitioner or healthcare provider focuses on why allowing thoughts and feelings to emerge. They acknowledge these feelings and thoughts by providing them with voice either in their heads or aloud while tapping on specific points. They always add a positive spin. An example would be setting a goal and have that flinch say it isn?t feasible. While tapping the practitioner would list all the things which would make the goal impossible to reach giving voice to the negative while ending the statement with one indicating the desire to change and willingness to release the negative.
With EFT abundance associated with pension transfer affirmations or positive focus thoughts the process is done three times on average. This helps to bolster the new thoughts and counteract the old negative patterns. Often these patterns and system is set from childhood.

PFT: Lions' Fairley driving 100 mph before DUI arrest

Mike TomlinAP

In early 2007, as the Steelers were looking to replace Bill Cowher, I was a huge proponent of Mike Tomlin.? Hidden for years in Tampa because the organization refused to allow position coaches under contract to interview for coordinator jobs, Tomlin proved in one season as Minnesota?s defensive coordinator that he was ready to be great head coach.

And he has been, even if the Rooneys nearly hired Russ Grimm instead.

Per Peter King?s Monday Morning Quarterback, Tomlin was inducted earlier this month into the Hall of Fame at William & Mary, where he started at receiver for three years.? And Tomlin gave a rather eye-opening glimpse into his mindset.

?One of the reasons I work in the National Football League ? I?m tired of the NCAA rules,? he said.? ?I am a win-at-all-costs kind of guy.? The NFL is just right for me, although I am not a bounty guy in any form or fashion.? Any form or fashion. . . .? What you?ve got to understand about the Pittsburgh Steelers is . . . I ain?t got to offer them anything.? Guys like James Harrison ? they?ll do it for nothing. ?The men I work with, I?m a blessed person.?

The easy message is that Tomlin has renounced paying defensive players to wreak havoc.? The more subtle message is that Tomlin wants guys who?ll wreak havoc without an extra cash incentive.

?I?m tired of the NCAA rules.?? It?s also clear that he?s tired of the NFL rules.? Every gripe and complaint and piss and moan from Steelers players regarding the league?s rules for hitting offensive players naturally traces to the coaching staff ? and ultimately to Tomlin.? Last year, for example, safety Ryan Clark was celebrated in the film room for a hit that got him fined $40,000 by the league office.

The dynamic culminated in the powers-that-be on Park Avenue talking to Tomlin and owner Art Rooney, presumably about the trickle-down effect of the things the coaches say to players behind closed doors.? As the NFL tries to make the game safer, Tomlin needs to realize that his ?win-at-all-costs? mindset needs to be tempered by a genuine respect for whatever rules may apply.

Especially when those rules are aimed at allowing the men he works with to be blessed with long, healthy lives.

Gearing Up for the Summer Wedding Season at Disney Parks & Resorts

?Kris

Here at Disney?s Fairy Tale Weddings we?ve been extra busy gearing up for June, which is always one of our busiest months of the year. And I have to admit that all of this June weddings hustle and bustle has given me a case of summer fever! As luck would have it, Kris and Jeff?s big day is just what the doctor ordered and comes chalk-full of the best summer has to offer ? beaches, sunshine and of course flip-flops.

?Kris

This dynamic duo met while working at Disney?s Animal Kingdom, but when it came time to tie the knot, Kris and Jeff packed their bags for a different kind of adventure ? a Disney?s Vero Beach Resort adventure, that is! The couple chose to infuse Vero?s seaside feel into every aspect of their wedding and paid extra special attention to detail. From the darling cupcake display (with a cake topper made by the bride herself) to the shoe check, this event was truly a coastline lover?s paradise.

Inmates, corruption rule Honduras' deadly prisons

Rodrigo Abd / AP

An inmate, handcuffed to the bars of his cell as punishment for beating a guard, smokes a cigarette at the San Pedro Sula Central Corrections Facility in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, May 3.

Inside one of Honduras' most dangerous and overcrowded prisons, inmates operate a free-market bazaar, selling everything from iPhones to prostitutes.

It's more like a fenced-in town than a conventional prison, where raccoons, chickens and pigs wander freely among food stalls and in troughs of open sewage. But guards do not dare cross the painted, yellow "linea de la muerte" (line of death) into the inner sanctum run by prisoners, and prisoners do not breach the perimeter controlled by guards.

Mediaite Confessional: I Was The New Jersey Hacker Mayor?s Campaign Manager

There it is, just as I imagined it. The gaudy Impact font, the gaping look of disbelief on his face; The Jersey Journal. It might be close to every day that Hudson County?s legendary corruption rag puts a local public official in handcuffs on its cover, but not every day is that official your old boss? one whose arrest you predicted in August 2009, to a city?s worth of chuckles.

While the nation sat transfixed on the so-called career-ending gaffes of wildly popular Newark Mayor Cory Booker, West New York Mayor Felix Roque?for whom I served as campaign manager from December 2008 to August 2009? was committing the career-ending ?gaffe? of getting busted by the FBI. This alone would not be news. It is a rite of passage for Hudson County mayors to host an undercover FBI agent armed with an irresistible sack of hard cash in Town Hall during your first week in office. Most mayors wait a few months before clenching their trembling fists over the bribes or make their underlings do the sordid work. A select few never take the money. Former Hoboken mayor Peter Cammarano eagerly stepped into the obvious mousetrap his first week in office, or so the jury decided.

RELATED: Trashing Obama: The First Sign Cory Booker May Have What It Takes To Unseat Chris Christie

To his credit, Roque has yet to get caught accepting literal moneybags in exchange for favors. Instead, he was arrested for allegedly hacking into the website of an opponent attempting to put into motion a recall vote against him, and allegedly threatening those who established the website. The mayor and his son appeared in court clad in undershirts, and Roque told the FBI that he ?would not have a problem with serving time in jail because he would work out and read while there.?

Seeing your former boss on Politico, in an article linked to on Drudge?or in the New York Times, in an article linked to at Gizmodo? is not what anyone should call a victory. Without a well-oiled campaign machine (of which I was, unfortunately, a part), no one would have bought into this area doctor?s capacity to run a local government. On the other hand, my last words as campaign manager so many years ago were ?you?re going to end up in jail if you keep acting like this,? so the news isn?t exactly unexpected.

Fresh out of college, I helped organize a recall against then-Mayor Sal Vega, a nefarious character who had raised property taxes to make up for lost state money. A key reason for the financial woes? He had challenged the incumbent state senator for his seat and lost, not only spending many months partially ignoring his job as mayor, but leaving the state of West New York?s representation in the New Jersey Legislature hanging in the balance. Vega was a mess and an easy target, the sort of politician who once managed to insult Cuban political prisoners, American war veterans, and the entire children?s population of West New York in one day (he tried to cancel their respective parades, as revenge on his political enemies). It was not difficult to convince the 45,000 residents of West New York that things couldn?t be worse under any alternative, including this random doctor who, having gotten bored with his office job, decided it was time to move into Town Hall.

Stanton 1st player to hit Marlins' sculpture

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:49 p.m. ET May 25, 2012

MIAMI (AP) - Giancarlo Stanton has become the first player to hit the Miami Marlins' home-run sculpture.

The Marlins slugger hit a pitch from San Francisco's Tim Lincecum into the base of the sculpture for a solo homer in the fourth inning of Friday's game. Giants center fielder Angel Pagan could only watch as the animated sculpture sprung into motion.

The home run was the 10th this month for Stanton, and his 11th of the season. The estimated distance was 409 feet.

Florida: Mack has big lead in Florida GOP primary, ties Nelson; Florida voters stand their ground

May 24, 2012 - Mack Has Big Lead In Florida GOP Primary, Ties Nelson, Quinnipiac University Poll Finds; Florida Voters Stand Their Ground
Word format

U.S. Rep. Connie Mack holds a wide lead in the race for the Republican U.S. Senate nomination, getting 40 percent of the vote to 7 percent for former Sen. George LeMieux and 8 percent for Tea party favorite Mike McCalister, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today. Another 41 percent are undecided.

A general election matchup is too close to call as Mack gets 42 percent to Democratic incumbent U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson's 41 percent. Gov. Rick Scott's job approval has risen above 40 percent for the first time, although he still remains underwater with a negative 41 - 46 percent rating from voters, the independent Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pe-ack) University survey finds. A majority of registered voters, 56 - 35 percent, support the state's "Stand Your Ground" law that has come under recent scrutiny. Support is 78 - 15 percent among Republicans and 58 - 35 percent among independent voters while Democrats are opposed 59 - 32 percent. Men support "Stand Your Ground" 65 - 31 percent while women support it 48 - 39 percent. Support is 61 - 31 percent among white voters and 53 - 36 percent among Hispanic voters while black voters are opposed 56 - 30 percent. "Although some activists have been critical of Congressman Connie Mack and his campaign, he retains an overwhelming lead in the race for the Republican Senate nomination and is tied with Sen. Bill Nelson," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "It is not clear how the late entrance of former Congressman Dave Weldon into the race will affect the campaign, but Mack's lead is pretty formidable with three months until the primary." Weldon was not included in the names of candidates offered survey respondents because he had not made clear his intention to run when the poll began. The too-close-to-call November Senate matchup compares to Nelson's 44 - 36 percent lead in a March 29 Quinnipiac University poll. Today, Nelson leads LeMieux 43 - 36 percent. Gov. Scott's slight improvement in the public eye is built on a 66 - 22 percent approval rating among Republicans. Disapproval is 74 - 14 percent among Democrats and 45 - 40 percent among independent voters. Scott runs even among men who give him a 46 - 44 percent score, while women turn thumbs down 48 - 36 percent. "Although Gov. Rick Scott's numbers aren't that impressive, they are a step up for him - the first time he has gotten his approval rating out of the 30s since taking office," Brown said. "His best previous score was 50 - 38 percent disapproval in January." The Trayvon Martin shooting has brought the issue of gun control and the state's "Stand Your Ground" law into the public eye. By 51 - 45 percent, voters oppose stricter gun control laws in the state with a huge partisan split and gender gap. Democrats favor stricter gun control 73 - 23 percent, while Republicans oppose the idea 74 - 22 percent. Independent voters oppose stricter gun control 51 - 42 percent. Women want stronger gun control 54 - 41 percent, while men are opposed 62 - 34 percent. "Despite the controversy, public opinion seems to be solidly behind 'Stand Your Ground' and slightly against stricter gun control," said Brown. On one area there was support for more gun control. By 83 - 14 percent, voters don't think even people with concealed weapons permits should be allowed to bring a gun into the State Capitol. By a narrow 49 - 46 percent margin, Florida voters disagree with Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn who wants guns banned from downtown Tampa during the Republican convention. From May 15 - 21, Quinnipiac University surveyed 1,722 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percentage points. Live interviewers call land lines and cell phones. The survey includes 742 Republicans with a margin of error of +/- 3.6 percentage points. The Quinnipiac University Poll, directed by Douglas Schwartz, Ph.D., conducts public opinion surveys in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, Ohio, Virginia and the nation as a public service and for research.
