New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu?and?elected officials from around the region will discuss their support for extending tolls on the Crescent City Connection this morning. Their pitch comes five days before voters in New Orleans and?Jefferson and Plaquemines parishes decide whether to extend the tolls, which expire Dec. 31, for 20 years.?
Bridging Progress,?a political action committee comprised of?business organizations in New Orleans, Jefferson and Plaquemines, has announced its support for a toll extension, saying the bridge?plays a major role in?economic development in the region. In addition, they say the state, which is closing hospitals,?cannot afford to maintain the span.
"This is an extremely strong coalition of elected officials who have earned the public trust, and we are excited they are coming together to show their support on such an important issue," said?Leon Giorgio, an officer in Bridging Progress.
The event?will begin?at 9 a.m. at?the Port of New Orleans.
