Union Catholic Teacher To Present At Microsoft Forum

UNION COUNTY ? Kim Leegan, a Union Catholic High School History educator, will be participating for her second consecutive year in the elite Microsoft Partners in Learning 2012 US Forum. This Microsoft forum is geared toward educators, and showcases and celebrates the work they are doing in classrooms across the United States.

This summer, 102 educators from 25 states are invited to showcase their projects, traveling to Microsoft?s worldwide campus in Redmond, Wash. from July 31-Aug. 1. Each educator?s project will be carefully evaluated by judges who are professionals in the education field and who select the finalists that will go on to represent the United States at the Global Forum in Athens, Greece this fall.

Leegan was the only educator chosen to represent the state of New Jersey and she is beyond thrilled. ?I feel so blessed to be given this incredible opportunity a second time,? says Leegan. She uses Microsoft products and software in her classroom on a daily basis, including OneNote, Bing maps, Encarta, Internet Explorer, and the Microsoft Office suite. ?Microsoft is truly committed to partnering with educators in integrating technology into the classroom and improving education for all. I am honored that I was chosen to present my work.?

The project that Leegan will be presenting is an Interactive Civil War Museum. After studying the Civil War, her students worked in teams to create an interactive museum. Each team selected a topic on the Civil War and conducted research using Encarta, Bing, Internet Explorer and other online databases. Each team created a Visual Display regarding the chosen topic and used voice thread technology and/or Movie Maker to record a voice-over regarding the selected topic. Exhibits were put on display. As people toured the museum, they were able to watch Moviemaker Films regarding each exhibit, as the students? laptops were next to each exhibit and ready to play the videos. Each team also created a QR code with additional hidden information on the chosen topic. As visitors exited the museum, they were invited to Tweet the exhibit creators with comments or questions. The Twitter feed was later followed in class.
