I Grew Up in the Kind of Family Beloved By Republicans -- And It ...

My father asks me what four times four is, and all I can think is ?eight,? though I know that?s wrong; whether it?s better ? safer ? to be wrong or to say, ?I don?t know,? depends upon his mood. The way my mother smiles at me as she clears my plate is of no help, there?s no telltale tightness in her eyes. He drums the flashcard against the tabletop and sighs. My fingers worry the edges of the iron-on patches ? a rabbit and a duck ? that Mom has fixed to my corduroy jumper. I gamble on ?eight,? but a yawn slips out instead. I haven?t even closed my mouth before he smacks it open again. He backhands me hard enough to blot out the world.

The family at the kitchen table is an indelible image, classic Americana. It sells pancakes and life insurance, and every four years, it peddles politicians. Each election cycle, the steely female narrators of campaign ads ask us to consider which candidate is best for American families, families that might?ve looked like mine until my father?s hand left me deaf and reeling for days.

I grew up in the kind of two-parent, father-makes-the-bacon, mother-fries-it-up home that Mitt Romney waxed ecstatic about when fielding a debate question on gun violence : ?We need moms and dads helping raise kids ? to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone ? that?s a great idea because if there?s a two-parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically.?

Our house had a parking pad and a fenced-in yard, it was near the best public schools in the county, and a quick drive from a park called ?Honeygo,? a word that forces you to smile when you say it. Inside that house, with Sears family portraits from every Christmas leading up the staircase and my trophies on the mantel, a flattened hand was a mercy. I?d taken fists to the face for spilling my milk. When I clogged the toilet, he whipped me with his belt so hard and so fast that the buckle flew off.

Before that debate even ended, my Facebook friends erupted with barbs and anecdotes about the productive lives they lead as non-spree shooters despite (or because of) being raised by single mothers. I wish I had those stories to tell ? not memories to relive in therapists? offices or scars to explain to my lovers. My mother never had the guts to strike out on her own.

As a girl, she?d been sold a bill of goods about the good life: a man who wore a tie to work and a house in a ZIP code full of supermarkets and malls and people who looked just like her; a daughter who?d earn a degree or two and, for a time, an impressive title ? until, of course, she met her own man in a gray flannel suit. She wasn?t told what to do when the man who owns the roof over her head slams her into a wall.

Every election cycle becomes a dire exegesis of ?family values,? a neurotic fixation on the nuclear family: ?Father Knows Best,? Mommie Dearest? and ?Baby Makes Three? (or Four, or even Five) have become the icons of a bygone era ? a postwar wonderland that boomed with prosperity in the shadow of the mushroom cloud.

It may have been the era of unlocked doors, but it was still the America where my father?s father beat him unconscious and my mother couldn?t have girlfriends sleep over ? not because she feared a father who might come home rip-roaring drunk and ready to fight ? simply because there was no father in the home. Only a mother who worked two jobs to keep her fed and still sewed all her clothes, a mother who told her to never tell anyone that Papa left them, to say, instead, that he?d died in Korea.

Fancy tools won't make up for a bad forecasting strategy - The Gremlin

?A lot of business planning depends on forecasts,? says Kevin Phillips, MD of idu Software, ?And in the quest for ever more accurate and reliable forecasts, a lot of people turn to increasingly fancy tools and algorithms.??

But what if the problem with your forecasts isn?t the tools you are applying, but your whole approach to forecasting in the first place? If your basic strategy is wrong, no amount of fancy processing will improve the quality of your forecasts. In fact, it could make things worse, by masking the incorrectness of the data and giving a dangerous false sense of confidence.?

Of course no prediction of the future can ever be better than an educated guess ? but we can improve our guesses by improving the quality of the information we base them on. It?s as the old adage goes: Garbage in, garbage out. If your forecasts for next year are based on nothing more than this year?s figures, their value is low.?

The most critical question to ask before you embark on any forecasting exercise is this: How much can we expect next year to be just like this year? Close on its heels should come the next question:? How many things that are going to make next year different do we already know about, or can we find out? There will always be unknowns lurking around the next corner, but it makes sense to reduce their number as much as possible.?

The question about what might change for your business next year is not one that can be answered by the finance department alone. Sure, there are some high-level variables you can get from professional economic analysts; but when it comes to the very specific issues that might affect your business, you need to be turning to your own managers and operational staff.?

One can?t help wondering, for example, if whoever compiled Lonmin?s forecasts for this year was aware of the fact that a rival union to NUM was organising at their Marikana mine. If they had known, might they have factored in an increased risk of industrial unrest??

An easy first step is simply to ask the question: ?Is it reasonable for us to assume that you?ll match this year?s production next year?? If the answer is no, seize the opportunity to find out more. What does your sales staff know about what competitors might be planning? What do your production managers know about a supplier that?s facing difficulties??

Instead of using technology to put your numbers through fancy contortions, use it instead to solicit information from your staff, quickly and efficiently.?

It?s a bit more work to do this research than simply to run this year?s figures through a clever algorithm, of course ? but the benefits go beyond more well-founded forecasts. If people know that their input has been heard, they?re typically more inclined to commit themselves to turning those forecasts into reality ? and to contribute intelligence to next year?s forecast in turn.?

Video: Fire rages on Sandy-stricken Jersey Shore

>> natalie up in the helicopter over new jersey. natalie ?

>> reporter: and good morning to you, matt. flying over here and taking a look down at the jersey shoreline it's just absolutely staggering to see what i'm seeing now. you've been talking about the fire that we are over right now in mantoloking, new jersey. this shoreline, as you know, completely devastated. the governor christie saying the shore of his youth is gone. the rides he took his kids on this summer are in the atlantic ocean . this fire, as far as we know, appears to be storm-related, but obviously we cannot confirm that right now, but what we've been able to make out by some of the structures down there, it appears some homes here have been damaged. lots of points of fire, about 25 or more that i've counted so far. the aftermath of this storm as we have seen, as you yourself witnessed in breezy point, queens yesterday. these fires are likely related to natural gas lines that are sparking the fires or downed electrical lines. this one, because of the location of it, as you can see, what was the shoreline and beautiful ocean front property , now completely pushed back, gone, covered by sand and fire there now here in mantoloking, new jersey. we're about four miles north of seaside. we know the situation there. the rides, the famous boardwalk, has also been completely wiped away. this is a community and area so vastly devastated. many, many people hopefully are out of these areas and have evacuated before the storm, but this fire very involved here. it's going to take a while perhaps before first responders can get to this because this is part of a barrier island . so it's very much cut off, and what was -- what is left of the roads very hard to make out there as well, so situation developing here as we are keeping our eye on this here for you, and we'll have more of an overview of the entire jersey shoreline coming up throughout the morning. matt?

>> thanks, natalie . we'll be checking in with you several times during the show. we appreciate it very much.

Mother Nature Plays Politics

Barack Obama speaks to the press after a briefing on hurricane Sandy at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Washington on Sunday. President Obama at a briefing on Hurricane Sandy at the Federal Emergency Management Agency in Washington on Sunday

Hurricane Sandy has interrupted the campaign, which makes her the most important woman in the swing states.?

Politics has taken a pause, but we all know it's a temporary one. It's unseemly to talk about politics with so many people about to face genuine danger. Then again, this campaign already has broken a lot of old rules. Candidates used to be loosely constrained by the facts. Not so much any more. Candidates used to be prohibited from making political attacks during a fresh national security crisis.?So it seems inevitable that Sandy will become a political force. It's also fitting for a campaign that has so often felt like a skirmish on the side stage that here we are facing deadly realities. In a sense, though, this storm touches on what this campaign has always been about: What should the federal government do, and does it have the resources to do it? We are eight days away from an election. This is the 2012 campaign's October surprise. (Though given the way this campaign has unfolded, there might be a November surprise.)?

Natural disasters can hit presidents in two ways. In 2004, President Bush visited victims of?Hurricane Francis in early September as his party was holding its convention. He played the first responder role then. A year later, Hurricane Katrina sidetracked his presidency.?If presidents get more blame for a weak economy than perhaps they deserve, there are also moments when there are political benefits to the office.?In times like this, Americans?Democrat and Republican alike?turn to government.?

President Obama pulled himself?off the campaign trail on Monday and returned from Florida before he attended a single event. He's not campaigning for at least two days. For the moment, in the major story of the day, he has a key role. As I type this, word has arrived from the White House that the president is in the Situation Room talking with his advisers, and as I review it, he has just finished speaking to reporters in the briefing room.?"I'm not worried at this point about the impact on the election,? said the president. ?I'm worried about the impact on families." Still, there will be some?poetical?cost or gain based on how his administration manages the disaster that all the forecasters say is coming.?

What does Mitt Romney do? Before the storm hit, he was trying to build the sense of a campaign that is rising as it approaches the finish line. His supporters are fired up like never before, but he's not gaining on the president as he did after the first debate.?Nate Silver says they have returned to the?condition they were in during the spring and summer,?which puts Obama in the better position.?

Romney needs to create a?bandwagon effect to lure undecided voters. He has?canceled his campaign events Monday and Tuesday. In the interim, it's hard to stay in the story without looking like he?s seeking political gain. His campaign informed reporters that he was on the phone with the governors of Virginia and New Jersey monitoring the situation. It's not quite clear what "monitoring" means in this context since he has no formal role to pay. (As I type this from Washington, a gust caused the windows to make such a noise that I thought it was the door opening.) Romney has also suspended his campaign?fund-raising?emails into the affected states, as has the?president.

Romney has been talking a lot about bipartisanship lately on the stump. It appeals to those undecided, married, suburban voters he and the president need in the battleground states. The president has been trying to sound this theme, too. If they were both serious about appealing to those voters, you could imagine one candidate offering to have his volunteers join with the other campaign in a relief effort in the hardest-hit areas of the states. The campaign that didn't think of this first would probably decline, giving the one that suggested the joint army of altruism the opportunity to look above it all while causing no practical problem for the campaign. The only problem for a candidate who made this offer would be if the other campaign agreed to it. It would deprive whichever campaign was losing of important manpower to get out the vote.?

OK, back from fantasyland.

The presidency has a performance aspect to it, especially during times of crisis, so evaluating the candidates now in a political context is part of evaluating them for the job they will hold. But there's also a practical effect of the storm. It may hamper early voting, and it may limit the organization-building benefits of candidate visits. The rains and winds could keep people from their polling places in North Carolina, and if the winter storm kicks up in Ohio, that could affect in-person voting there, too. It could also affect the door-to-door canvassing that's supposed to take place in those states. Virginia is the only state affected by the storm that has absentee voting, which requires an excuse and doesn't really take place in person, so the state won't be affected as much as the others.

Two days of no campaign events means two days when the candidate can't be used to attract voters. When candidates come to town, it initiates a range of organizing efforts?including busing voters to the polls after rallies?that won't take place if the candidate isn't in town. Bill Clinton has stepped in for Obama during the crisis period, which might be a blessing. Clinton's convention speech was better received than Obama's acceptance speech because he is a more articulate spokesman. On the eve of the storm, Clinton told voters in Connecticut: "We?re coming down to the 11th hour. We?re facing a violent storm.?It?s nothing compared to the storm we?ll face if you don?t make the right decision in this election.?

Any disruption in the early vote or ability to harness candidate visits would probably hurt Democrats. Their voters are harder to turn out, so each day lost is a lost chance to get someone to the polls. On the other hand, if I'm home all day in Ohio, I might have the time to mail in that ballot I've had sitting on the dresser.

Now we wait. It is temping to think that politics will be the last thing on people's minds in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, but that's as unrealistic as thinking if I step outside right now I won't get wet.

The Merage Jewish Community is presenting an eclectic mix of thought provoking films and authors combined with humor and entertainment at the third annual Orange County Jewish Arts Festival which runs from November 8 through November 18th. All events will be held at the JCC which is located at 1 Federation Way in Irvine.

?Brothers?

Thursday November 8, 7 pm

Drama: Hebrew with English subtitles

The Orange County Jewish Arts Festival begins with the thought provoking film Brothers a drama directed by Igaal Niddam dealing with Israels religious-secular divide .The film will be followed by a panel discussion with Rabbi Elie Spitz, Professor Scott Spitzer and Professor Steven Russo-Schindler discussing the issues dramatized.

In recent years, the Jerusalem has seen an increasing number of demonstrations from extremist elements of the Haredi (ultra-orthodox) community, protesting perceived violations of their strict interpretation of Jewish law. This is the backdrop for the film Brothers (produced by Troubadour Films, Geneva in Hebrew, with English subtitles). The film focuses on the troubled relationship between two brothers who have not seen nor spoken to each other for 25 years: the distinguished lawyer and Torah scholar Aaron, who has traveled to Jerusalem from the United States in order to defend a group of Yeshiva students who have refused military service in the IDF and his brother, Dan, an idealistic kibbutznik. A brilliant defense lawyer, Aaron finds his equal in his adversary Shelly, a driven, fiercely secular public prosecutor. The combination of an intelligent script, outstanding performances and the directors commitment to presenting the issue in all its complexity, makes for a rich and satisfying viewing experience. Tickets are $ 12 and available online or at the door.

Microsoft Releases Windows Phone 8 SDK

windowsphone_symbol_clr_56x56Microsoft has released the Windows Phone 8 SDK for the Build developer conference, now taking place on the Redmond campus. The SDK is described as an environment “for building apps and games for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5.” That’s pretty obvious but why 7.5? That’s the odd thing here. It has a stand-alone Visual Studio Express 2012 edition. It can also work as an add-on to Visual Studio?Express 2012 edition for Windows Phone or works as an add-in to Visual Studio 2012 Professional, Premium or Ultimate editions. Microsoft says the SDK also includes emulators and additional tools for profiling and testing a Windows Phone app under real-world conditions. Here are the system requirements from the site: Supported operating systems:?Windows 8, Windows 8 P Windows 8 64-bit (x64) client versions Hardware: 4 GB of free hard disk space 4 GB RAM 64-bit (x64) CPU Windows Phone 8 Emulator: Windows 8 Pro edition or greater Requires a processor that supports Second Level Address Translation (SLAT) RedMonk analyst Donnie Berkholz, here at Build said this to me about the SDK: Windows Phone 8 now provides an end-user experience on par with iOS and Android. The public release of the developer SDK finally makes it possible to nail a critical component of mobile adoption, the broader app ecosystem. Unfortunately the SDK wasn?t released in advance of Windows Phone 8 so developers could have apps available at the release, which will hurt both developers and Microsoft because of the importance first impressions have to consumers. Given Microsoft?s near-legendary tenacity and its clear understanding of the importance of mobile devices, I expect they?ll continue pursuing this until they get it right — if not for Windows Phone 8, for the next release.

TrackBack - MS Estate Planning

Entity Level Liabilities

Real estate should be conveyed into an entity to protect against liabilities generated from the property. ?Insurance should be purchased. ?This is basic entity level asset protection. ?However this does not address personal liabilities.

Real Estate

Real estate is an asset protection problem. ?It cannot be removed from the local jurisdiction, and carries many potential liabilities. ?Possible solutions include: conveying the property into a Partnership which is then owned by an Off Shore Asset Protection Trust; mortgaging the property and the proceeds transferred as cash to the partnership owned by the offshore trust; or pledging the real estate to secure other liabilities.

Personal Residence

The personal residence may be conveyed to the spouse that has fewer potential liabilities. ?For example, a surgeon may have more potential liabilities than does his wife who does not work outside the home. ?Alternatively, the personal residence could be encumbered with liabilities so that the net equity fits within any state law exemption. ?In addition, title may be held as tenancy by the entirety so that the creditor of just one spouse cannot access the property.

Hurricane Sandy Provides Business Opportunities In Queens

JENNIFER PELTZ, Associated Press
TOM HAYS, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) - The effects of the superstorm that flooded parts of the city are lingering into Tuesday and likely will for much longer, with a large swath of the city out of power, subway and vehicle tunnels flooded, and the financial district closed for a second day.

A fire destroyed at least 50 houses overnight in Queens' flooded Rockaway peninsula and forced the rescue of about 25 people from an upstairs apartment. Officials weren't immediately able to pin down the cause of the blaze.

The storm was once Hurricane Sandy but combined with two wintry systems to become a huge hybrid storm whose center smashed ashore late Monday in New Jersey. New York City was perfectly positioned to absorb the worst of its storm surge - a record 13 feet.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

At polluted Santa Susana lab site, sacred cave attracts tribe's bid

The Chumash tribe has expressed interest in buying a 450-acre slice of a contaminated nuclear research facility in the hills between the Simi and San Fernando valleys, hoping to preserve a cave that its members consider sacred.

The tribe's inquiries about acquiring part of the 2,849-acre Santa Susana Field Laboratory have stirred concern among some residents who fear the purchase might be a back door to building a casino.

"I very much respect their desire to protect sacred sites but I want to make sure any such action precludes the establishment of a casino," Ventura County Supervisor Linda Parks said.

Sam Cohen, government affairs and legal officer for the Santa Ynez Band of Chumash, said there is no possibility of a casino on the property. The tribe wants to protect a swath of land that includes the Burro Flats Painted Cave, which is decorated with some of the best preserved Native American pictographs in California.

"If the tribe owns the land, we'll be in the best position to protect sacred sites," Cohen said.

Parks questioned whether the Chumash, a sovereign nation like other federally recognized tribes, would be bound by the elaborate cleanup agreement orders that apply to the portion of the sprawling facility that they are seeking.

Most of the lab site is owned by Boeing, which purchased it when the company acquired Rocketdyne in 1996. Boeing has not signed on to a 2010 cleanup plan with state regulators, but under the plan, NASA and the U.S. Department of Energy have promised to remove tainted soil and pollutants from the areas they control by 2017.

The Painted Cave is on NASA land.

Listed in 1976 on the National Register of Historic Places, Burro Flats has long been recognized for its archaeological significance. Perhaps as long as 1,000 years ago, Native American groups used the cave for rituals. Its walls are lined with paintings, including stick-figure animals and cornstalk-like plants. On the first day of winter, a shaft of light illuminates a design resembling a target; some researchers believe it was used in a ceremony marking the winter solstice.

Established in 1947, the secretive lab tested liquid propellants for rocket engines. In 1957, one of America's first commercial nuclear power plants was built at the site, generating electricity for nearby Moorpark. In 1959, that plant was also the site of America's first partial nuclear meltdown ? an accident revealed only decades later. Over the years, the lab generated toxic and radioactive wastes that neighbors blamed for cancer and other illnesses.

Even amid testing of about 30,000 rocket engines, the area around the cave was not damaged. Tight security kept visitors away. Over the years, NASA has admitted closely escorted groups of Native Americans "for ceremonial purposes," but such treks have become increasingly rare, said Merrilee Fellows, a NASA spokeswoman.

Although decades of security have helped preserve the cave's painted images, Cohen said, the tribe fears the effects of possible cleanup measures, including one he described as "scraping the site clean."

Officials say such fears are unfounded.

"We've heard hyperbole being kicked around about scraping the top off the mountain and it's not remotely accurate," said Rick Brausch, who is directing the cleanup for the California Department of Toxic Substances Control.

Scientists are still gauging the scope of contamination on the NASA-controlled property, he said. Some of the cleanup will involve carting off truckloads of soil. Other methods have not yet been determined.

"We don't even think there's contamination in that particular area" of the cave, Brausch said. "If there were, we'd design a strategy that wouldn't destroy the resource."

Regardless of whether the land changes hands, the cleanup will proceed, officials said.

The federal General Services Administration has deemed the NASA portion of the lab "excess" property, indicating its willingness to sell. Last month, the Bureau of Indian Affairs told the agency that the tribe was interested in mounting a bid. No price has been disclosed.

Cohen said the tribe might collaborate with other Native American groups to build a cultural center.

He said the tribe would not seek to make the land part of its reservation ? a legal requirement for tribal gambling operations. The Chumash have met stiff opposition in their attempt to annex 1,400 acres just down the road from their tiny Santa Ynez reservation. Neighbors fear the tribe will erect a casino on the property, a scenario the tribe denies.

No matter your initial thoughts or skepticism about "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters," the early promotion and teaser trailers have done a good job in selling the film's bottom line, which seems to be a blend of fantasy, action and a little camp thrown in for good measure. Investors See Bargains in Depressed Greek Real Estate - WORLD ...

Real estate, and especially commercial real estate, is beginning to play a strong role in the economic recovery of Greece, according to brokers, bankers and consultants in Athens and London.
?
One big reason is the coalition government led by conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras that came to power in June has impressed some investors. Samaras promised to do everything needed to keep bailout funds flowing, easing fears of bankruptcy and leaving the Euro zone.
?
Even German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who calls the shots on bailout programs for sick Euro zone members, has eased her former position on allowing Greece to default on its debt.? Other Euro zone members may be following Merkel's position.
?
Dimitris Manoussakis, head of the Athens office of real estate consultant Savills, recently told the media the Greek government's new stance in selling state assets, including real estate as a condition of its bailout over the next several months, may start to convince some investors they will be getting a fair price on property transactions.
?
Greek investors, especially those living abroad, are becoming interested again in commercial property like hotels and retail, with demand even coming from the US, South Africa and Australia. Six months ago, that same interest was lacking, according to global real estate analysts.
?
Those potential investors are eyeing bargain prices as their incentive to step back into the market. Those same investors, however, abandoned the country when its economy was faltering and took much of their cash with them.
?
Reuters reported Kostas Kazolides, a London-based investor who has been investing in and advising on property deals in Greece and Cyprus for 35 years, recently said "There are deals that (once) didn't make sense but do now as the outside world takes the government more seriously."
?
He added, "People are talking about going back in and buying. There are villas in Mykonos going at 30 percent of their value because sellers are feeling the pinch." A 30 percent fall in construction costs was another incentive.
?
Data from Lipper, a Thomson Reuters company that tracks the funds industry, shows the amount of money flowing out of Greek equity funds is slower in 2012 than previous years and turned positive in August.
?
The net outflow from funds investing in Greek equities during 2012 was 17 million euros at the end of August, out of a total asset base of 690 million euros, which indicates a slowdown in investors running for the exit from the 50 million euros of 2011 and 42 million euros lost in 2010, according to Reuters.

Sandy causes travel disruptions

While still at sea, Hurricane Sandy already is causing widespread problems for millions of travelers, with mass transit shutdowns ordered in New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Amtrak cancellations and more than 6,800 flights canceled.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Sunday ordered New York City's transit service to suspend bus, subway and commuter rail service in advance of the massive storm expected to hit the eastern third of the United States late Monday.

The system started shutting down shortly after 7 p.m. on Sunday. The last buses ran at 9 p.m.

"The transportation system is the lifeblood of the New York City region, and suspending all service is not a step I take lightly," Cuomo said. "But keeping New Yorkers safe is the first priority, and the best way to do that is to make sure they are out of harm's way before gale-force winds can start wreaking havoc on trains and buses."

Story: Hundreds of thousands ordered to evacuate as? Sandy bears down

Transit systems
The city's mass transit system is the nation's largest. The subway alone has a daily ridership of more than 5 million.

"The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) proved it can suspend service in an orderly manner when it did so last year for Tropical Storm Irene, and we have refined our Hurricane Plan since then to help us prepare for Hurricane Sandy," said MTA Chairman and CEO Joseph J. Lhota. "This storm will batter the MTA, but the precautions we take now will allow us to recover much more quickly."

"The New York City subway system will begin to curtail service after 7 p.m., and the New York City bus system within the following two hours," the MTA said in a statement. "Metro-North Railroad and the Long Island Rail Road will start their final trains by 7 p.m. Subway and railway stations will be closed after the last trains.

"Customers who need to travel today should do so as soon as possible and not wait until the last train or bus is departing. Anyone who does not leave for their destination before 7 p.m. runs the risk of being stranded when service is suspended. New York City Transit, Metro-North and the LIRR will cross-honor each other's passes today to speed the process of returning customers to their homes."

According to an MTA spokesman, the shutdown will take about eight hours to complete. This process includes the removal of electrical components in the subway that would be affected in case of flooding. Workers are preparing for that possibility, the spokesman told NBC News.

The East River ferry service was suspended, and the Staten Island Ferry will stop running at 8 p.m., New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said in a press conference Sunday.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie ordered all of the state's bus, rail and light rail to begin a gradual shutdown at 4 p.m. ET, continuing through 2 a.m. Monday. The Atlantic City Rail Line will also suspend operations then.

In metropolitan northern New Jersey, PATH train service and stations also were to be shut down at 12 a.m. Monday.

Metro-North Railroad, which runs service between New York City and its northern suburbs in New York and Connecticut, will suspend service beginning at 7 p.m. Sunday, NBC affiliate WVIT reported.

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) announced Sunday it would be suspending its service starting at about 12:30 a.m., and anticipated the shutdown would last through Monday.

The D.C.-area transit system said most of its preparations for Hurricane Sandy are complete and added there are no announced changes to Metrorail or Metrobus service as of 11:00 a.m. Sunday.

Airlines
According to FlightAware.com,the most heavily affected hub was Newark, N.J., with more than 265 cancellations on Sunday. In total, 1,251 flights to, from or within the United States were canceled Sunday, FlightAware.com said. More than 5,500 flights scheduled for Monday were canceled.

Major airlines are offering waivers to customers who wish to reschedule their flights without paying the typical fee of up to $150. To cancel a ticket, passengers should call the airline.

Don Morelli, a meteorologist with WSI, a sister company of The Weather Channel, said major flight delays and airport closings were likely to continue through Tuesday.

"The criteria for closing an airport is around 58, 60 miles an hour, which is easily going to be reached for much of the major hubs from D.C. northward to New York City and even into Logan (in Boston)," Morelli said. "Major delays (are) going to be very, very widespread right through mid-week, so [it?s] not a good week to be traveling across the Northeastern U.S."

Airlines started moving planes out of airports to avoid damage, CBS News reported.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey spokesman Anthony Hayes told NBC News that New York City-area airports remain open despite the flight cancellations. The decision to cancel flights comes from the airlines directly, he said, not from the Port Authority or the airport.

The Port Authority is encouraging travelers to check their flight status with the airline before heading to the airport.

Trains
Amtrak also announced that all Acela Express, Northeast Regional, Keystone and Shuttle services are canceled for Monday. Additionally, Empire Service, Adirondack, Vermonter, Ethan Allen and Pennsylvanian train services are also suspended, along with overnight services to and from the East Coast, according to a press release.

Service between Chicago and Washington D.C., Miami and New York, and Washington D.C. and New York is on the list of cancellations announced Saturday morning.

Amtrak said in a press release that passengers who have paid for their tickets but choose not to travel due to the service disruption can receive a refund or a voucher for future travel. Some tickets booked online that have not yet been printed can be modified or canceled, the press release said.

Amtrak said they will be contacting passengers who have provided information in their reservations, but encouraged customers to monitor alerts on their website.

In town for a friend's wedding, Lori Wolfman waited in a long line to change her tickets to an earlier train at New York's Penn Station, CBS News reported. Wolfman and her husband were supposed to be on a 3 p.m. Washington-bound train, but were exploring their options.

"We'll get on anything," she told CBS.

NBC News' Becky Bratu and Tom Costello and the Associated Press contributed to this report.

GOV. CHRISTIE TO ARREST ?STUPID PEOPLE? | Weekly World News

With Hurricane Sandy set to destroy the Jersey Shore, Governor Chris Christie ordered all stupid people arrested.

A year after telling New Jersey residents to ?Get the hell off the beach? as Hurricane Irene approached, Gov. Chris Christie has a new message for people on the coastline: ?I am going to arrest all the stupid people in New Jersey. ?We can?t risk them harming anybody else during the hurricane.?

Hurricane Sandy is poised to make a direct hit on New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie issued the typically blunt warning to those who he thinks ?are morons or imbeciles? ? those that think they should ride out the storm.

This was the first guy arrested by New Jersey State Troopers:

And this was the first woman arrested:

Governor Christie said that most ?stupid people in New Jersey? live at the Jersey Shore and ?for some stupid reason, they think they can survive a hurricane with just a six-pack of beer and spray tan.?

Christie, who famously urged New Jersey residents last year to ?get the hell off the beach? as Hurricane Irene approached, urged residents of the state?s narrow barrier islands to move to higher ground. He predicted the storm would come ashore somewhere between Toms River and Atlantic City. ?In preparation for the storm, he said he would personally be eating a ?whole chicken and two cows? just in case he would be away from food during the hurricane.

Christie has had a War on Stupid People since he came into office. ?A source close to Christie said that the Governor would prefer to round-up all the stupid people in New Jersey and bus them out to Minnesota or some other ?cold, blue state.?

In other news, Chris Christie announced that he is going on Nutella diet.

?I think this one?s going to do us in,? said Marc Pinotta, owner of a bait and tackle shop on an inlet to the ocean in Point Pleasant Beach. He used the same wood he boarded up the store with in past storms to secure it this time, crossing out the names of hurricanes Isaac and Irene and spray-painting ?Sandy? next to them. ?Marc then put a pair of boxers on his head and danced into the surf.

?I got a call from a friend of mine from Florida last night who said, ?Marc: Get out! If it?s not the storm, it?ll be the aftermath. People are going to be fighting in the streets over gasoline and food,? he said. ??But I don?t listen to people in Florida, because they are retards.?
