Tonight's NBA draft could offer Jameer Nelson some much-needed info

11:24 a.m. EST, June 28, 2012|

By Josh Robbins, Orlando Sentinel

Jameer Nelson has until 11:59 p.m. on Friday to inform the Orlando Magic whether he?ll exercise his player option for the 2012-13 season.

Nelson might take every available minute to make that decision.

Nelson has played his entire NBA career with the Magic, and his strong preference is to remain with the team beyond the 2012-13 season.

Problem is, if he accepts his player option, he would become much more valuable on the trade market. Teams could seek to acquire him from the Magic in a trade because his salary of about $7.9 million would come off the books after the 2012-13 season. Nelson would not be able to block a trade.

Plus, Nelson is 30 years old now, and at his age, he could be facing his last opportunity to negotiate a multiyear deal. All things equal, it?s easier for a 30-year-old to receive a multiyear free-agent deal than it is for a 31-year-old player to receive a multiyear free-agent deal.

It appears that Nelson is prepared to decline his option if he cannot get an extension or some kind of commitment from the Magic.

Declining his option almost certainly would mean that he would have to accept less money for the 2012-13 season. But at the same time, he would be gaining more long-term security in the form of extra seasons. A multiyear deal also would make him less attractive trade bait.

New Magic general manager Rob Hennigan has spoken with Nelson and Nelson?s agent, Hennigan said Wednesday.

Hennigan said of Nelson: ?He has a decision coming up on Friday, and we hope that he decides to stay in Orlando, and we hope he is wearing a Magic uniform next season.?

But what about the 2013-14 season and beyond?

Perhaps not even Nelson knows.

Publicly, Hennigan hasn?t given any specifics about his plans.

And he might be bringing that same measured tone to his discussions with players.

Much remains to be seen about the Magic?s direction. The roster could be headed for a total rebuild.

Tonight?s NBA draft should offer some clues.

If the Magic trade Dwight Howard tonight for a bunch of draft picks and one established player ? and that?s a big ?if? ? that would be a clear sign that the team is looking to build from the bottom up.

Or if the Magic select a point guard in the first round ? perhaps North Carolina?s Kendall Marshall or Kentucky?s Marquis Teague or Washington?sTony Wroten Jr. ? that would be a sign that the franchise is looking to get much younger at the position.

The company is selling the device, known as Project?Glass, for $1,500 to people attending its annual conference in San Francisco for computer programmers. It will ship early next year and won't be available for sale outside the three-day conference,?Google?I/O, which started Wednesday.

"This is new technology and we really want you to shape it,"?Google?co-founder Sergey Brin told about 6,000 attendees. "We want to get it out into the hands of passionate people as soon as possible."

Brin told reporters that?Google?intends to sell the?glasses?for significantly less once the product is released to the mass market. He said?Google?hopes to start selling the device to consumers in early 2014.

"I think we are definitely pushing the limits," Brin said during a question-and-answer session with reporters. "That is our job: to push edges of technology into the future."

With the?glasses, directions to your destination or a text message from a friend can appear literally before your eyes. You can converse with friends in a video chat, take a photo or even buy a few things online as you walk around.

In development for more than two years, the project is the brainchild of?Google?X, the online search leader's secret facility that spawned the self-driving car and could one day let people ride elevators into space.

Isabelle Olsson, an engineer on the?Glass?project, said the company created the?glasses?for people to interact with the virtual world without distracting them from the physical world. It's designed to interact closely with your senses, without blocking them.

She said?Google?had two broad goals in mind: communications through images and quick access to information. The device has a camera to capture fleeting moments and allow others to see the world through your eyes.

Google?demonstrated the device by having parachutists jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above San Francisco. The audience got live video feeds from their?glasses?as they descended to land on the roof of the Moscone Center, the location of the conference.

Google?had given a glimpse of the technology in a video posted earlier this year.

(AP) ? Cadel Evans thinks one Tour de France title will make it easier to win another one. And he's ready to add that second championship right now.

Evans opens his title defense when the 99th edition of cycling's marquee race begins Saturday with a quick, 4-mile prologue in Liege, Belgium ? an individual time trial expected to be dominated by specialists such as Fabien Cancellara of Switzerland and Tony Martin of Germany, or contender Bradley Wiggins of Britain.

The beginning of the Tour offers the cycling world a welcome return to racing after the sport's doping ghosts returned this month, with charges by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency that Lance Armstrong used performance-enhancing drugs en route to his seven Tour victories. He denies doping and notes he has never failed a drug test.

For a race covering 2,100 miles over three weeks, the prologue is just the very beginning for the rider who will cycle down Paris' Champs-Elysees in the yellow jersey on July 22 ? but it could provide an early indication about who won't be in front at the end. Evans was already playing down expectations about how he might fare in it.

"It starts tomorrow on a stage that isn't so suited to me," the BMC team leader said Friday. "But from here on in, it's all systems go, and I'm looking forward to getting another Tour started."

Evans says he has a "similar mentality" to his winning approach last year. But this year's route goes heavier on time trials ? with more than 60 miles total in individual races against the clock ? and lighter on steep mountain climbs than the most recent Tours.

"Knowing that we have already won one, it makes it quite a little bit easier," Evans said. "When you've won one ? in the bag ? it's there. ... It makes it a whole lot easier. You don't have this question of doubt: 'Maybe I can win it, maybe I can't?' We know we can."

He acknowledged that race connoisseurs are predicting a two-man showdown between Evans and Wiggins, a three-time Olympic track gold medalist who has converted to road races and worked hard to improve in the mountains that are often crucial to winning the Tour.

"They tell me that Wiggins is the man to beat, so they say, but we'll see it on the roads," Evans said. "Three weeks on the road is a long time, and a lot can happen."

Wiggins is off to a terrific start this season, winning the Criterium du Dauphine, the Tour de Romandie and Paris-Nice stage races this year. Evans, by comparison, admitted he has been off to a "bit of a quiet start" to 2012, with just one victory in the three-stage Criterium International ? but is progressing and hopes to peak for the Tour.

Wiggins wants to become the first Briton to reach the Tour podium, and possibly take home yellow ? and with the London Olympics ahead next month, is doubly motivated.

"I can't wait to get down that ramp and put down into practice all these months of training," he said. "I don't think I've ever been this good: All this stuff we've been doing this week suggests that I am in the form of my life."

Wiggins said he's sensed through social media how many fans back in Britain are behind him.

"In England ... every child's dream is to lift the FA Cup at Wembley or whatever," Wiggins said. "This is my Wembley."

The crop of likely contenders has thinned in recent months. Alberto Contador was suspended from racing until August and stripped of his 2010 Tour title for doping in that race. Andy Schleck ? who inherited the Spaniard's title after placing second that year ? is out with a spinal injury.

International Cycling Union president Pat McQuaid expressed concern that the absence of aggressive mountain climbers like Contador and Schleck might deprive the Tour of some drama.

"By all accounts, it should probably pan down to a race between two individuals: Cadel Evans and Bradley Wiggins," McQuaid said. "They're both very similar type of individuals, which could make it a little bit uninteresting because they're both slightly conservative in the mountains, and they both depend on their time trial abilities to win the race."

"So it could be a methodical race, unfortunately," he told The Associated Press.

The three uphill finishes are relatively few by recent Tour standards. The first comes on the eastern Vosges mountains in Stage 7, with a steep ride up the Planche de Belles Filles ? followed by rides up to ski stations: La Toussuire in the Alps in Stage 11, and Peyragudes in the Pyrenees in Stage 17.

Outside threats for overall victory include Dutch rider Robert Gesink, the winner of the Tour of California this year, American veteran Levi Leipheimer ? solid in both time trials and the mountains ? and Italy's Vincenzo Nibali, the winner of the 2010 Spanish Vuelta who is back at the Tour for the first time since 2009.

After three days in Belgium, the race cuts from the English Channel across northern France to the Vosges, down to the Alps, down to the nudist-beach town of Cap d'Agde on the Mediterranean Sea, then into the Pyrenees, followed by a pivotal time trial in Stage 19 ? on the eve of the finish in Paris.

"The basics of the race remain the same: You've got to get to Paris quicker than everyone else," Evans said. "Winning one Tour was great. Winning two must be better, right?"

Were dinosaurs warm blooded? The bones point to yes. (+video)

Studies of growth lines in bones cast into doubt?the belief that dinosaurs were cold-blooded,?researchers?say.?

Dinosaurs may not have been the slow, sunbathing reptiles researchers used to think. In fact, they may have been warm-blooded, new research suggests.

From the BBC show Horizon - My Pet Dinosaur.

The researchers studied the "growth lines" on animal bones, which are similar to the growth rings in tree trunks. During slow-growing times like during the winter, they are darker and narrower, while in fast-growing times the bones have lighter, wider bands.

Figuring out if dinosaurs were warm-blooded endotherms (made their own body heat) or were "cold-blooded" ectotherms that relied on outside sources of warmth could illuminate a lot about how they lived, grew and evolved. How warm an animal is has an impact on their metabolism, and therefore how quickly they can grow and have babies.

Of bones and blood

Previously, scientists had thought that growth lines showed up only on the bones of cold-blooded animals, since these animals grow in fits and starts. Warm-blooded animals, like mammals and birds, are assumed to grow continuously, because they keep their temperatures up and have high metabolic rates, continually making energy to grow.

As such, researchers took the growth lines on dinosaur bones as evidence of their cold-bloodedness. Until now.

In this study, the researchers compared the bone lines from the leg bones of more than 100 wild ruminants (warm-blooded mammals like sheep and cows that have multiple stomachs) with seasonal rainfall and temperature cycles and with the animal's core body temperature and resting metabolic rate. The researchers showed that these warm-blooded animals also have bone growth lines indicating fast, yet interrupted yearly growth that depended on how long the "unfavorable" season lasted. [Image Gallery: Dinosaur Fossils]

Hot dinos

The growth lines they found on the ruminants were similar to those seen in previous studies of dinosaur bones ? indicating that both ruminants and dinosaurs have periods of high growth punctuated by "unfavorable" seasons with limited resources and little growth. This means that dinosaurs were likely warm-blooded like the ruminants.

"The argument we are giving in our paper, rather in favor of endothermy in dinosaurs, is that between the growth and rest lines, there's always a big region of highly vascularized [infiltrated with blood vessels] tissue that indicates very high growth rates," study researcher Meike K?hler, of the Autonomous University of Barcelona in Spain, told LiveScience. "This is typical in dinosaurs and very different from reptiles, which have slow growth between the rest lines."

Alito, and Elena Kagan inside Supreme Court in Washington, Monday, June 25, 2012. (AP Photo/Dana Verkouteren)

(AP) ? The Supreme Court on Monday threw out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. The ruling continued its trend of holding that children cannot be automatically punished the same way as criminal adults without considering their age and other factors.

The 5-4 decision split along ideological lines: The court's four liberals and swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy joined to order states and the federal government to allow judges and juries to consider a juvenile's age when they hand down sentences for some of the harshest crimes, instead of making life in prison without parole automatic.

By making youth "irrelevant to imposition of that harshest prison sentence, such a scheme poses too great a risk of disproportionate punishment," wrote Justice Elena Kagan, who was joined in the majority opinion by Kennedy and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

Monday's decision left open the possibility that individual judges could sentence juveniles to life without parole in individual cases of murder, but said state and federal laws cannot automatically impose such a sentence.

This decision is in line with others the court has made, including ruling out the death penalty for juveniles and life without parole for young people whose crimes did not involve killing.

Dissenting, the court's four conservatives said nothing in the Constitution forbids laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. Chief Justice John Roberts was joined in the main dissent by Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Alito also wrote separately and read his dissent aloud in the courtroom.

Under the majority opinion, Alito said, "Even a 17?-year-old who sets off a bomb in crowded mall or guns down a dozen students and teachers is a 'child' and must be given a chance to persuade a judge to permit his release into society. Nothing in the Constitution supports this arrogation of legislative authority."

Twenty-six states and the federal government have made life in prison without parole mandatory for some types of murder and allowed it to be applied to 14-year-olds, court papers said. In addition, Louisiana has some mandatory life without parole sentences for 15-year-olds, and Texas has some for 17-year-olds.

The decision came in the robbery and murder cases of Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, who were 14 when they were convicted and sentenced to life without parole.

Jackson was sentenced in Arkansas after the shooting death of a store clerk during an attempted robbery in 1999. Another boy shot the clerk, but because Jackson was present he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated robbery.

Using his case, Breyer and Sotomayor said in a separate opinion they would have gone even further than just getting rid of laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles like Jackson. "There is no basis for imposing a sentence of life without parole upon a juvenile who did not himself kill or intend to kill," Breyer said in a separate opinion.

Miller was convicted in Alabama of capital murder during the course of arson. A neighbor, while doing drugs and drinking with Miller and a 16-year-old boy, attacked Miller. Intoxicated, Miller and his friend beat the 52-year-old man and set fire to his home, killing him.

Monday's high court ruling "is an important win for children," said Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who represented Jackson and Miller. "The court took a significant step forward by recognizing the fundamental unfairness of mandatory death-in-prison sentences that don't allow sentencers to consider the unique status of children and their potential for change. The court has recognized that children need additional attention and protection in the criminal justice system."

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange expressed disappointment with the decision. "It is rare that a juvenile commits the worst kind of murder. But when this happens, the Alabama Legislature and most other American legislatures have determined that the appropriate sentence is life without parole. And they have made that sentence mandatory. Thus, it is hard to understand the Court's ruling that this sentencing procedure is 'unusual' for the purposes of the Eighth Amendment," he said.

The court's ruling was based on the Constitution's Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.

Strange said he didn't expect the ruling to be applied retroactively to others whose sentences are already final. And while Miller will get another sentencing hearing, "the prosecution will have a compelling argument that he should receive a life-without-parole sentence," he said.

In Arkansas, prosecutor Scott Ellington said he expected the state Supreme Court to notify prosecutors, lawyers for Jackson and any others affected by the ruling to tell them what happens next. "The speculation is that those cases that are affected in this case will have to have a new sentencing hearing," Ellington said.

According to data provided to the court, roughly 2,500 people are behind bars for life with no chance of winning their freedom for murders they committed before their 18th birthday. More than 2,000 of them were there because the sentence was mandated by a legislature.

Advocates say 79 of them are in prison for crimes that took place when they were 14 or younger.

The cases were Miller v. Alabama, 10-9646 and Jackson v. Hobbs, 10-9647.

Southwest outsourcing RIC ground workers' jobs

By: PETER BACQU? | Richmond Times-Dispatch

Southwest Airlines is outsourcing the jobs of 12 AirTran Airways employees who load planes at Richmond International Airport.

The workers, who handle airliners "below the wing" on the aircraft parking ramp at the terminal, have been offered transfers to eight other AirTran stations, according to Southwest spokesman Paul Flaningan in Dallas.

He could not say how many of the workers, whose jobs at RIC will end Aug. 15, had opted to transfer to another station.

"The deadline for impacted employees to make a decision is July 2," Flaningan said, and it "would be premature to confirm any number until that deadline passes."

Ramp outsourcing is not new at RIC, where more than half of the air-carrier flights use non-airline ramp contractors, according to the Capital Region Airport Commission.

AirTran uses contract "rampers" at some of its smaller stations, Flaningan said. The changes are not expected to affect AirTran's customer service agents at RIC.

Southwest bought AirTran, a smaller low-cost carrier, in 2011.

While the schedule for transitioning from AirTran to long-sought Southwest service here is "fluid," Flaningan said, "We are committed to Richmond. This is a business decision that was made with an eye to long-term viability and profitability of that station."

AirTran now has five daily flights at RIC ? four to and from Atlanta and one to Orlando ? and carries about 10 percent of the airport's 3.2 million annual passengers.

Officials expect that Southwest's entry into the Richmond market will expand the number of destinations conveniently available to RIC passengers while helping hold down ticket prices.

Southwest says its average passenger fare is $141.72 one-way, and the average passenger trip length is 939 miles.

The ramp-worker outsourcing at RIC should not be linked to Southwest's eventual service in Richmond, Flaningan said.

Troy Bell, Richmond International's director of marketing and air service development, concurred, saying "the impact on service and schedule is, in my opinion, essentially neutral."

"You can pretty much bet on Richmond being a major Southwest city," aviation consultant Michael Boyd, president of Boyd Group International in Evergreen, Colo., said. "That's one gold mine they're not going to abandon."

Southwest has relatively high labor costs, the airline as well as industry analysts say, while the competing legacy airlines have gone through bankruptcies and been able to reduce labor expenses, putting pressure on the Dallas-based Southwest to make reductions.

'General Hospital' wins big with 5 Daytime Emmys

The Daytime Emmys showered "General Hospital" with five trophies, including best drama, while giving Regis Philbin a fond farewell as a departing talk-show host.

NBC's "Today" show won as best morning show and the syndicated "Jeopardy!" was named best game show at the annual ceremony Saturday.

"Live with Regis and Kelly" was saluted as best entertainment talk show (its first-ever nod in that category) and for best talk-show hosts. Philbin ended his long run as its co-host last November, with a replacement yet to be named to join Kelly Ripa as the syndicated series continues.

Heather Tom, who won as best lead actress for CBS' "The Bold and the Beautiful," made history as the first to win in that category after having previously won as both best younger actress and supporting actress.

Anthony Geary won as lead actor for "General Hospital." The ABC soap also won for supporting actress (Nancy Lee Grahn), supporting actor (Jonathan Jackson), and directing team.

The syndicated "Dr. Oz" was named best informative talk show.

Bill Geddie, longtime associate of Barbara Walters and executive producer of her ABC talk show "The View," received the life achievement award.

"There's not a lot of glamour and glory in daytime," Geddie told the room in his acceptance remarks. "But when you think about it, we're all here with the best of intentions: We just love making TV!"

Held in Beverly Hills, Calif., the 39th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards was telecast on the HLN channel, having moved to cable for the first time after airing on CBS the past two years. The awards are bestowed by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.

The Beverly Hilton, where the presentation originated, was the site only hours earlier of what investigators believe was a murder-suicide. Police responding to a report of a shooting late Friday found a man and a woman dead from gunshot wounds in a guest room. The luxury hotel was also the site of Whitney Houston's death in February, when the singer drowned in the bathtub of her room.

By Ian Johnston, msnbc.com

Naked volunteers painted in red and gold on Saturday recreated American photographer Spencer Tunick's interpretation of scenes from the Richard Wagner opera "Der Ring des Nibelungen."

The art installation, in Max-Joseph Platz, Munich, Germany, was held to mark the opening of the 2012 Munich summer opera season, according to information supplied with these photographs by Luca Teuchmann of Getty Images.

Tunick was invited to create the work by the Bavarian State Opera.

According to his website, Tunick has been documenting the "live nude figure in public" since 1992.

The Bavarian State Opera invited American photographer Spencer Tunick to create the photographs as part of the opening of the 2012 Munich summer opera season Saturday.

"Tunick's installations encompass dozens, hundreds or thousands of volunteers; and his photographs are record of these events," the website says.

"The individuals en masse, without their clothing, grouped together metamorphose into a new shape. The bodies extend into and upon the landscape, like a substance," it adds. "These grouped masses, which do no underscore sexuality, become abstractions that challenge or reconfigure one's views of nudity and privacy."

A non-antibiotic approach for treating urinary tract infections

Wednesday, June 20, 2012

A potential new approach for treating urinary tract infections (UTIs) ? which affect millions of people annually ? without traditional antibiotics is being reported in ACS' Journal of Medicinal Chemistry. It involves so-called FimH antagonists, which are non-antibiotic compounds and would not contribute to the growing problem of antibiotic resistance bacteria.

Beat Ernst and colleagues explain that antibiotics are the mainstay treatment for UTIs. Bacteria, however, are developing resistance to common antibiotics, with the emergence of "superbugs" that shrug off some of the most powerful new antibiotics. Thus, the scientists decided to try a new approach ? developing substances that target bacteria virulence factors, inhibiting them from sticking to the inside of the urinary bladder. Hence, microbes are not able to launch an infection and, furthermore, this new class of antimicrobials is expected to exhibit less selection pressure and, therefore, a reduced potential for the emergence of resistance.

The scientists describe the development of anti-adhesion molecules that specifically interfere with the attachment of bacteria to human bladder cells. The most potent of the substances, an indolinylphenyl mannoside, prevented a UTI from developing in mice (stand-ins for humans in this kind of experiment) for more than eight hours. In the in vivo treatment study, a very low dose of 25 ?g per mouse reduced the amount of bacteria in the bladder of the animals by almost 10,000 times, which is comparable to the standard antibiotic treatment with ciprofloxacin.

University researchers develop 50 gigapixel camera, hope it hits the mainstream in five years

University researchers develop 50 gigapixel camera, hope it hits the mainstream in five yearsGigapixel cameras aren't exactly hot-off-the-presses, but a few wizards at Duke and the University of Arizona may be close to getting that sort of technology into your future point-and-shoot. Reportedly, electrical engineers with gobs of free time and an imagination the size of Coach K's ego have managed to synchronize 98 minuscule cameras in a single device, creating a prototype 50 gigapixel monster. The real kicker here is the hope for the future: these same researchers feel that "within five years, as the electronic components of the cameras become miniaturized and more efficient, the next generation of gigapixel cameras should be available to the general public." The prototype itself measures a whopping 2.5-feet square and 20 inches deep, but only around 3 percent of it is made of optical elements; the vast majority is circuitry needed to calculate the stupefying amount of information captured in 50,000 megapixels.

Trouble on the horizon for genetically modified crops?

ScienceDaily (June 20, 2012) ? Pests are adapting to genetically modified crops in unexpected ways, researchers have discovered. The findings underscore the importance of closely monitoring and countering pest resistance to biotech crops.

Resistance of cotton bollworm to insect-killing cotton plants involves more diverse genetic changes than expected, an international research team reports in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

To decrease sprays of broad-spectrum insecticides, which can harm animals other than the target pests, cotton and corn have been genetically engineered to produce toxins derived from the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, or Bt.

Bt toxins kill certain insect pests but are harmless to most other creatures including people. These environmentally friendly toxins have been used for decades in sprays by organic growers and since 1996 in engineered Bt crops by mainstream farmers.

Over time, scientists have learned, initially rare genetic mutations that confer resistance to Bt toxins are becoming more common as a growing number of pest populations adapt to Bt crops.

In the first study to compare how pests evolve resistance to Bt crops in the laboratory vs. the field, researchers discovered that while some the of the lab-selected mutations do occur in the wild populations, some mutations that differ markedly from those seen in the lab are important in the field.

Caterpillars of the cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, can munch on a wide array of plants before emerging as moths. This species is the major cotton pest in China, where the study was carried out.

Bruce Tabashnik, head of the department of entomology at the University of Arizona College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, who co-authored the study, considers the findings an early warning to farmers, regulatory agencies and the biotech industry.

"Scientists expected the insects to adapt, but we're just finding out now how they're becoming resistant in the field," Tabashnik said.

To avoid surprises, researchers have exposed cotton bollworm populations to Bt toxins in controlled lab experiments and studied the genetic mechanisms by which the insects adapt.

"We try to stay ahead of the game," he said. "We want to anticipate what genes are involved, so we can proactively develop strategies to sustain the efficacy of Bt crops and reduce reliance on insecticide sprays. The implicit assumption is what we learn from lab-selected resistance will apply in the field."

That assumption, according to Tabashnik, had never been tested before for resistance to Bt crops.

Now for the first time, the international team gathered genetic evidence from pests in the field, enabling them to directly compare the genes involved in the resistance of wild and lab-reared populations.

They found some resistance-conferring mutations in the field were the same as in lab-reared pests, but some others were strikingly different.

"We found exactly the same mutation in the field that was detected in the lab," Tabashnik said. "But we also found lots of other mutations, most of them in the same gene and one in a completely different gene."

A major surprise came when the team identified two unrelated, dominant mutations in the field populations. "Dominant" means that one copy of the genetic variant is enough to confer resistance to Bt toxin. In contrast, resistance mutations characterized before from lab selection are recessive -- meaning it takes two copies of the mutation, one provided by each parent, to make an insect resistant to Bt toxin.

"Dominant resistance is more difficult to manage and cannot be readily slowed with refuges, which are especially useful when resistance is recessive," Tabashnik said.

Refuges consist of plants that do not have a Bt toxin gene and thus allow survival of insects that are susceptible to the toxin. Refuges are planted near Bt crops with the goal of producing enough susceptible insects to dilute the population of resistant insects, by making it unlikely two resistant insects will mate and produce resistant offspring.

According to Tabashnik, the refuge strategy worked brilliantly against the pink bollworm in Arizona, where this pest had plagued cotton farmers for a century, but is now scarce.

The dominant mutations discovered in China throw a wrench in the refuge strategy because resistant offspring arise from matings between susceptible and resistant insects.

He added that the study will enable regulators and growers to better manage emerging resistance to Bt crops.

"We have been speculating and using indirect methods to try and predict what would happen in the field. Only now that resistance is starting to pop up in many places is it possible to actually examine resistance in the field. I think the techniques from this study will be applied to many other situations around the world, and we'll begin to develop a general understanding of the genetic basis of resistance in the field."

The current study is part of a collaboration funded by the Chinese government, involving a dozen scientists at four institutions in China and the U.S. Yidong Wu at Nanjing Agricultural University designed the study and led the Chinese effort. He emphasized the importance of the ongoing collaboration for addressing resistance to Bt crops, which is a major issue in China. He also pointed out that the discovery of dominant resistance will encourage the scientific community to rethink the refuge strategy.

Tabashnik said China is the world's top cotton producer, with about 16 billion pounds of cotton per year. India is number two, followed by the U.S., which produces about half as much cotton as China.

In 2011, farmers worldwide planted 160 million acres of Bt cotton and Bt corn. The percentage of cotton planted with Bt cotton reached 75 per cent in the U.S. in 2011, but has exceeded 90 per cent since 2004 in northern China, where most of China's cotton is grown.

The researchers report that resistance-conferring mutations in cotton bollworm were three times more common in northern China than in areas of northwestern China where less Bt cotton has been grown.

Even in northern China, however, growers haven't noticed the emerging resistance yet, Tabashnik said, because only about 2 percent of the cotton bollworms there are resistant.

"As a grower, if you're killing 98 percent of pests with Bt cotton, you wouldn't notice anything. But this study tells us there is trouble on the horizon."

TomTom VIA 1605TM

Still not convinced smartphones are as good as GPS devices? You're not alone. The VIA 1605TM ($229.95 list) features the largest screen TomTom has ever used for a GPS device: 6 inches?and it's sharp. Magellan has been rocking 7-inch panels on its RV-focused RoadMate series for a while now. But most of those devices are much larger and heavier. Apart from the compelling design, the TomTom VIA 1605TM ?is a solid performer with accurate routing and a newly refined user interface. This, combined with an affordable price, makes it our new Editors' Choice for budget stand-alone GPS devices.

Design, POI Search, and Navigation
The VIA 1605TM measures 4.2 by 6.2 by 1.4 inches (HWD) and weighs 9.5 ounces with the mount attached. It's made entirely of matte black plastic, with a faux brushed aluminum texture on the front bezel. TomTom finally bumped the screen resolution higher, to 800 by 480 pixels. That's plenty for a portable navigation device, since you're not reading ebooks or browsing the Web on it. It's still a plastic resistive screen, though. To go capacitive, with its instantaneous finger response, you'll have to step up to the TomTom GO 2535M LIVE ($249.95, 4 stars), although you'll lose screen resolution and size in the bargain. A plastic resistive screen at this size isn't much of an issue, though, as it's easy to hit the oversized buttons.

loading...

?

TomTom devices aren't known for intuitive POI search. Entering addresses works well enough in practice, and the database is comprehensive. I still think additional subcategories are needed, though. "Shopping," for example, needs to be broken down further. On the plus side, the type-ahead feature works quickly; I didn't find myself waiting for it to catch up to my finger presses.

Thanks to the VIA 1605TM's sharper screen resolution and larger size, this is the first time the information bar has looked clean and uncluttered on a TomTom device. I prefer TomTom's information bar, because it shows current road speed, the speed limit, and plenty of trip data at all times. Garmin and Magellan devices aren't quite as informative when en route.

In a series of test routes, the TomTom 1605TM worked exactly as I expected, including on a trip from New York City to Philadelphia and back again. Tap the speed limit sign?newly oversized and easier to see at a glance?and it will display an overhead map of your route, Google Maps-style, which is useful to have handy. As for map animation, the frame rate speed still lags; the TomTom 1605TM doesn't offer the smooth animation of the Garmin n?vi 3590LMT ($399.99, 4 stars). At this price, it's fine, though. Map graphics themselves are a little bland as well, but the sharper screen resolution certainly helps.

Traffic, Other Features, and Conclusions
There's no HD Traffic support. You still get TomTom's older real-time traffic service, which isn't updated as often, but works about as well as it can. During testing, I found I could rely on it most of the time. I've always preferred TomTom's vertical traffic bar on the right, which shows you where the jams are, and how long they are, along the way to your destination.

The TM in the model name, incidentally, indicates lifetime map and traffic updates, both of which are welcome in an age of smartphone apps that provide the same thing for free. In the case of the 1605TM, you get four free map updates per year. That's fine, considering the maps are stored locally on the device?you sync it with your computer to refresh the maps.

Occasionally, a new Alternative Route dialog pops up at the top of the display, indicating whenever traffic conditions change in such a way that makes a different route faster. Tap the dialog, and it will switch you to the shorter trip. Sometimes the 1605TM alerted me to a new route even when there wasn't an appreciable savings in time. In those cases, it would say the alternative route is "as fast," which isn't as useful, since it never tells you exactly what's different about the other route. But aside from that minor gripe, I appreciated the quick access to avoiding traffic jams.

TomTom rates the battery life at up to two hours of continuous operation. Even though that's a low figure, I doubt this will be a problem for most consumers. The only time battery life comes into play in the car is if you need the power jack to charge a phone, or power, say, a DVD player for a passenger. The 1605TM lacks a hands-free Bluetooth speakerphone mode, which is more troubling, though you can always purchase a separate unit like the SuperTooth Crystal ($69, 3.5 stars) if your car doesn't already have it built-in.

Our Editors' Choice for high-end portable navigation devices remains the Garmin n?vi 3590LMT, thanks to its 3D terrain mapping, ultra-sharp map graphics, and easier POI search. It also features more granular traffic reporting. Our previous Editors' Choice in the budget category, the Garmin n?vi 2350LMT ($229.99, 4 stars), is still easy to use and operates smoothly, although it displays occasional ads, and its 4.3-inch, 480-by-272-pixel display can't touch the VIA 1605TM's. The TomTom GO 2535M LIVE adds HD Traffic support and the aforementioned capacitive touch screen for $20 more, but it's also a step down in screen size compared to the VIA 1605TM.
